Good flow 4 a 75g

Anyone got any ideas for flow in my 75g with a 30g . I have 2 maxi 900s now and I think I need more.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'm using 2 Koralia 4's and 1 Koralia 2, plus my return pump. I think I could probably go without the 2 if I wanted to, but I think 2 4's are a good match for a 75.

I think 2 K4's would work nicely as well. Maybe put your MJ's on a wave timer. Or you could just mod your Maxi's and turn them into Koralia clones.

For the price, koralias are pretty good. but if you have the $, go with vortech. you could probably get away with just having 1.

So IYO you think 1 MP40 alone would generate enough water movement in a 75g without additional power heads? new to the hobby and want to replace the 2 korallas # 4 in my tank.

One would be fine

I have a 75G and was considering two MP40Ws. Both on the same end, but one towards the front and one towards the rear. They will be alternating and operating opposite each other to alternate the flow.

Thoughts?

^^^ You would need at least 2 IMO if you were doing SPS. For softies and LPS you could probably do 1.

The nice thing about the Vortech Pumps is that you can reduce the flow rates. So, you would have no prob with two in a 75g, but you might have to reduce flow rates.

Ditto

I have 1 mp40w in my 75 sps tank and its great. I did have 2 tunze nano streams modded and they were great too. Much less expensive. Both options are better than a hydor, just too big in the tank in my opinion. I have never seen a tank hide those hydors especially a relatively small tank like a 75. The tunze's can be resold for 50 or more when you decide to upgrade to the vortech later on.

Jeff:

I'd echo austin93's suggestion to consider Tunze nanostreams. Tunze is expensive compared to Hydor's offering, but has a 2 year warranty + it's fully serviceable so you will never have to throw one away to buy a whole new unit. Replacement parts are even reasonably priced. This makes the single-speed nanostreams (and streams 2's for that matter) probably the most economical option in the long run. Maybe the short run too - they're a very solid product in many respects.

I'm running a pair of 6045's in my 38 gallon reef....sounds like a lot, but I think you'll actually be able to get a lot more out of them in a four foot tank. That extra space lends more momentum to the water moved by the nanostream. :-) My tank is cramped and it's hard to generate much momentum at all, so I ended up needing two. (I really need to re-re-stack my rocks...:o)

I predict a pair of 6045's in your 75 gal would be very nice. Easy to add a third or fourth later as the tank grows in. Or even sell the two and trade up to a Tunze Stream 2 (options from 1700 gph to 3100gph under $270) or even a fully controlled Tunze or Vortech if you *really* feel like upgrading. :smokin:

To me the economy (2 for about $210 for 2400 gph total) and performance (all around) of the 6045's put them in a sweet spot...adding one or more as needed (if needed) in the future is an alright strategy. :-)

BTW, about $280 will get you a Tunze 6055 with their Single Controller - fun, very useful combo. Similar price and performance (at least in terms of gph) to the Vortech mp10. (I prefer the aim-ability of the Tunze's personally, but the Vortech's are a solid product too.)

-Matt

P.S. If the Sure Flo mod kits work on your Maxi Jet's, that makes another option worthy of consideration. (I'm not sure.)

I'm running 2 K'3s, a modded maxijet 1200 (2000gph+), a closed loop around 600gph, and my return at around 400gph.

I feel like I finally have enough flow, but you do see the powerheads. It is a tradeoff, IMO. I can't drop 400 on a vortech, so I deal with having a bunch of powerheads in the tank. I've gotten used to them though.

HTH,

Good to know that 9025's resell for so much. I used 2 modded tunze 9025s in my 75, and the flow was great. When I upgraded to a 90, they just didn't push enough volume. I just upgraded to a MP40W. I'm not happy with the flow at the other end of the tank, so I put one of the 9025's on the back wall, pointed at the far end.

2 MP40W's would be overkill, IMO, because you'd be dialing them both down so much. When I researched adding them to my 90 (trying to decide if I needed 1 or 2) I read a thread where someone added the MP40W to one end of a 90 and a MP10 on the back wall at the opposite end.

Looks clean, effective, and is $200 cheaper than 2 MP40W's.

I picked up 6 MJ, 3 900, 1 1200, 1 600, 1 400, 2 of the 900 are modified, the 400, is in my sons 16gal tank, I have a 9 in 12 in my 75gal tank, and the other 9 I use just to move water, IE water changes. I bought all of them w/ the mods for under $50. Look around, there is plenty to waste your money on in this hobby.
