Thats what makes this country the greatest country in the world. We are allowed to have an oppinion. It was my oppinion to let people know that the Saddam saga was over. There was no statement of oppinion about what I thought about his death, just that it happened. It was the modderators oppinion to close the post and yours to congradulate him for doing it. It is my oppinion that if one OT post is closed, then all should be. This is a message board for aquariums keeping. Just my 2 cents. If I was in the wrong or offended anyone, I apologise. It wasn't a post celebrating his death. It was only for information. I didn't ask for a discussion about it. In the future I will guess I will just have to scrub my posts to make sure that there is NO way it will offend anyone.

However....
The way we do things here has worked pretty well so far, and we will continue to judge each and every situation separately. We have a long standing rule here prohibiting political discussion. Anything political will be closed/removed. Any Staff or Mod here has the power to decide to close a thread they feel should not be open.
For the record, I back Mhurley's action 100%.

The censorship of OT Political comments as a rule is just UN American.
Have you read the <a href=http://reefcentral.com/agreement.php target=_blank>User Agreement</a>? We specifically call out political and religious discussion as not being allowed.
You've been here long enough to perhaps remember a time when we did allow those discussions...and they always, always ended in disaster.
If you want to call me and this board "UN American" because the owner chose to stop those flame wars long ago, then so be it. We're used to be called Nazi's, Communists and much worse. I'm simply enforcing the <a href=http://reefcentral.com/agreement.php target=_blank>User Agreement</a> as it has been for years.
The funny thing is, this only becomes an issue when some hot political/religious item occurs...On a day-to-day basis, people don't want to talk religion and politics here.
If you want to, there's a few other forums we can point you toward that maybe are more American for your tastes. But sorry, it's just not happening here because it is consistently made clear to us that in a board of this size, it is not possible for people to have a rational political or religious discussion.

What is political or religious about informing someone that one of the most murderous men in the world has been executed?I could see being in the wrong if I was jumping up and down celebrating his death. I am not. I actually believe that things will get worse now that he is dead. Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

As an example of what happens when politics and religion is allowed, look at reefs.org and hit the find new button. Every page is so full of it (pun intended) that each page of new posts is lucky to have 1 or 2 posts regarding reefkeeping or anything to do with fish at all. It's so bad that I posted in their feedback forum and the general response was don't use the find new button. They might as well change their name it's a waste of time to even type the address into your browser.

It is ok to have on topic political comments: ( the entire Responsible Reefkeeping forum ) nothing but some PC rhetoric about recycling and what you should do about some third world country and their bad practice of fish collecting.
It is Not ok to have Off topic political comments: when referring to the death of a former head of foreign state in any of the threads to include yours which was only an announcement and not in any way political.
It is ok to have Off topic political comments: when referring to the death of a former US head of state.
