Good price for clowns?

I recently seen a pair of platinum clowns on sale for $35 a piece, so I bought them immediately (pair). They also had a black ice clown that wasn't as nice (imo) for $35 also. Was afraid to ask incase they changed the price but I did and the guy said he got a good deal on them and had them in store a month. Surprised me. Anyways just wondering if that's a good price or the going rate these days, and if I should go buy the black ice too! I'm tempted, I'm just looking for a second opinion.

Sounds like a reasonable price to me for them.

3 clowns in the same tank could mean 1 or 2 less in the near future though.

There was nothing in your original post to indicate you have multiple tanks. I'm glad you are aware enough to not attempt to combine a trio of two pairs in small tanks. Unfortunately, this topic comes up quite frequently (typically they OP doesn't believe it when only one person posts dissenting beliefs), thus my reiterating the point from the first response.

Good luck with your tanks.

Aaaaaaa, thanks. I have several tanks though. no need to repeat the answer to a question I didn't ask.

One of the great things about this site is there are a number of helpful experienced people that add extra foresight into helping others in order to ensure responsible reef keeping.
For most of us it would seem irresponsible to not at least comment, not just to answer your question, but since it is an open forum we are aware others are reading/learning from this as well.

+1. There are tons of "lurkers" who read posts to gather information. If we don't address the multiple clown issue on every single thread that talks about it, we wouldn't be helping anyone.

A simple " I know I can't put more than a pair in a tank" would've mitigated the issue.

Thanks guys, but I think we've got way off track. It just gets a little annoying when people avoid the actual question to give there opinion about something that's irrelevant when they don't have info. How about instead of avoiding my question to post something ur assuming u just ask if u don't know. I now have 5 posts and only the first one tried to answer it.
Thanks Sn8kbyt for ur response to my actual question and ur concern. I will place said clown in another tank or if I like the mixed pair I will replace one of my platinums since they may have come from the same spawn anyways.

Sorry, I got caught up and forgot to answer your question. $35 isn't bad for a black ice. They can go for $100 in some cases, but I don't expect the trend to last.

The problem with "designer" clowns is that the market is flooded with all sorts of variants. In many areas such as here in the SF Bay Area, the market is saturated. Most stores have pairs of designers that they can't move, which brings the price down. With large hatcheries such as SA and Sea & Reef producing lots of designers, including black ice, I expect the price to continue to come down. The fish that will command and get higher prices will be those that have unique markings and solid body structure (no flat face, no underbite, etc.) that will be picked up by collectors/breeders.

In other words, rather than getting something because it's a good deal, get it because you like it. When the price drops to 20 bucks in a year, the hope is that you will still enjoy it nonetheless.

I actually really like the platinums, there pretty and crazy friendly! I just never have given them much of a look cause the $100 or more price was a little much to me. The price just seemed to drop quick or I missed something. They r definitely awesome, but being same size and same design I'm betting they r related so was thinking of maybe getting another designer I like and move which ever gets ignored first. Seen they had the black ice that was nice so was curious of that price too. Looks like they just got some good deals and r passing it on.
