i am going today to purchase a new skimmer for my 55 gal folwer. I dont plan on going full blown reef, but in the future would like some mushrooms, feather dusters, and a few easier to care for coral, could you guys give me some suggestions on a good yet affordable skimmer? thanks!

That's a reef... don't consider it not "full blown". I like my Coralife Superskimmer 125. You should also stay away from terms like "affordable" since that's really relative to your budget, and we can't possibly know that.

Skimmers pay for themselves over time. Without one, you are going to be replacing more water, and water costs money. Buy a good one. There's all sorts of opinions as to what a good one is, but most all agree that you get what you pay for.

well I have a skimmer now, it worked great for about 6 months but it just quite producing bubbles, the motor is workinng, its gettng suction, it just comes and goes..so i am upgrading,, I would like to stay in the 200-300 range for a skimmer, i have seen some that get up to 800 or more

I have heard good things about the Typhoon skimmer--I ordered one for my tank--it's on backorder, should get it next week sometime

I don't know what a cascade filter is, but if it is a sump type, you should go w/ Octopus 150nw. If it is not and you need a HOB skimmer go w/ the Coralife Super Skimmer 220.
