Good T5 lamp to grow chaeto?

Can someone suggest a good T5 lamp for growing marine macro algae like chaeto? I believe spectrum in the 6500k is what I need but where would I find a good proven lamp? What I bought was a generic 6500k warm white lamp from home depot but not sure if that is the best option.

Thanks!

Don't know about T5s, but I have found that the Fluval LEDs for Aqualife & Plants grow macro algae very well. If you have a petco close by, they will be offering them at 50% off this Fri/Sat! Might be worth a look.

As long as you have good wattage, the 6500k is what you're looking for. How many bulbs and how many watts is your t5?

4x4' 32w t5s over a container that is only 6" deep and 40" long and 18" wide. I wasn't sure about warm white versus cool white while either can be a specific kelvin like 6500k. And I wasn't sure how important the CRI was with this type of light.

Thanks for the info. I am kind of committed to T5 at this point.

That I could not tell you, if they are different colors they should be different spectrum. I would expect you'd want the cool white.

Ok so does a "plant" bulb or a "grow" bulb have anything special to it other then the spectrum?
Depends really the target plant. The redder, usually with plants, you get less dense growth. This is with hid lighting for plants. For cheato, usually, the lower Kelvin and spectrum analysis spread, the better(from my experience). The 3k red works crazy good!

Honestly, if your committed to t5 for your underwater plants, you probably better off(and most people don't realize this) going to the hydroponic store and spending less on the bulbs. I was running sunlight supply and hydrofam cfl and at one point t5 fixtures on muy fuge.

Worked great! Though honestly, the cfl mogul based systems blew t5 out of the water..

Thanks for the info. I guess I shouldn't say I am commited to T5. I bought 2 cheap fixtures from homedepot already and thats what I have running. But if something else was much better I would make the switch in a heartbeat. I am trying to out compete some algae/bacteria growth in my display and really hope this refugium will make the difference. So if it means buying a half dozen $5 mogul base clamp lights and a 6 pack of a specific compact fluorescent lamp then I am more then willing. Infact years ago I was using compact fluorescents with good success. I figured these T5 fixtures would give me better coverage on such a large area (40"x18"x6"tall). So please let me know if there is a specific lamp I should get instead. I can always use the two T5 fixtures in the basement over a work bench or something.
Again this is for growing cheato

A big advantage of T5 is the large area covered by long bulbs. Many T5 lamp color options are available to visually look apealing.
For economy and efficiency I like full spectrum lighting which is achieved with CFL. For growing Chaeto it is hard to beat.

That is an awful lot of light on a 6" deep trough. If the bulb shows 6500, it is the best for photosynthesis activity. I used to run actinic mixed with daylight delux T12 lamps on reef tanks. A 4' long daylight delux tube was less than $5 when bought by the box.
Are you running a lot of volume thru this raceway to distribute and remove heat.

Yes I am running a lot of volume thru this raceway. I think I am going to switch to cfl. Seems like that is the way to go from what everyone is saying. Is there a preferred lamp out there or are all 6500k cfl lamps the same (other then wattage)?

I just upgraded my fuge light.. Lol, i decided to do "what I know" works! From 6 watts to 150.. I should see results in just a few days..

And the camera dimmed it tremendously.. It lights up the whole room when upside down.. But nice thing is no heat!

Funny u just made this post because I literally just finished hanging the 125w Feliz lamps. Found a great buy of $25 each and free shipping. So hopefully in a few days I will see some signs of growth. I haven't gotten any growth at all with the other T5 lamps. I also doses a little iron after finding a good article from Randy Farley

Did you? Lol.. Comical.. I wondered how everything went for you..

Lol, i just got tired of waiting for anything to grow. I had that light on that fuge for over 3 months and nothing... Lol, then, i saw a couple tufts of hair algea. Yes, control nutrient with gfo and other means, but there are more ways to skin a cat. The funny thing is when i went in the store to buy the light, the guys said I'm like the third person they have seen try this. I told them that this wasn't the first time i did this (new store i am going to) and the results.

They then laughed with me, as i told them, both how much the fuge lights run, and how people struggle to get growth from cheato, which in essence is just an underwater plant. We talked for maybe 30 minutes about it, and about led light, etc . Also how it relates to hydroponics and aquaponics, etc.. It's always insightful talking and catching up with newer tech in above water plants..

But I'd love to see some pictures of your setup, as what your proposing for yours is my dream setup with a remote fuge area. That, and growth pictures. Me though, I would try without the iron first. If nothing else, as a control and without adding an additional element to the water. After all, our goal is to "extract" and not add.

The planted tanks, yes, but for what we are doing, the potential synergy of tech from aquaculture and agriculture is tremendous. If i had your setup, i would do mangroves as the ones i had grew insanely fast (in two months i got like 6" vertical growth and tons of leaves, then below water, root structure was insanely trenched in the substrate:searching for nutrient and they looked great!). And pod growth was insane!

The main limiting factor in growth of most plants is not nutrient, as shown by hydro growth, but light! For light loving plants that is. And then, we ask know that we can never supply as much light as the sun can. But you can accelerate things massively! I really don't think most understand how insanely we can enhance things.. We really aren't throwing enough light at our fuges to really do much of anything. That's why there are the typical limits to refugiums: nutrient extraction, slow growth, needing big fuges to really do anything, and most importantly penetration of light throughout a certain depth..

And my levels dropped massively once the stuff started growing. It also was like clockwork after i harvested that it would go up a tiny bit and then pull massively once the plants healed and started accelerated growth again.. It really is fun to watch, a person just had to try it and watch the results..

Just talking out loud. Lol, like we talked, I have always loved plants and animal life. Anything to benefit or forward the advancement of both, I'm game..

Just an update as the cheato is growing great, i have trimmed it 3x so far and these are the shots from the weekend and today. I included one just to show pod activity down there..

Very little growth in my set up. I wonder if it's because of the small amount of gfo I am running. I am hesitant to stop using it in fear my weird algae will rebound.
