GoPro Hero3 Black underwater

Has anyone here had experience with the new Hero3 underwater?

I'm taking a Hawaiian vacation within the next month and was thinking about purchasing/renting a Hero3 black for the couple weeks. It looks like a really great, super easy way to get good quality underwater footage.

Haven't seen anything shot with the Hero3's yet, but I've seen some really good results with the Hero2's used with the underwater housing.

Make sure to use the dive housing, otherwise the picture quality isn't quite as sharp.
Also, depending on if you are diving or snorkeling, a red filter really helps with proper coloration once you get below about 15-20ft deep.

I did a quick video of my tank. Its a pretty rough cut and the quality dropped a bit when exporting. Im still trying to mess with the best import/export settings.

I got the underwater housing for my Gopro and can't wait until March when we go on our trip. There are a lot of videos out that show the difference with the curved lens and a flat lens. The flat lens looks so much better!

Hey all,

I have the GoPro Hero 2 with the flat lens Dive Housing. Love it! I bought a grip for better handling underwater.

Here is a vid of the GoPro in my tank (second part of vid at 3:10):

I also have a vid of diving with it:

HTH -- I highly recommend it. If you notice, my dive vid has the blue tint of under-lit underwater videography. They sell the red filters that you put over the dive housing to compensate (like gojk said), but I haven't tried that yet. Of course you can also mount the camera on a light rig, but that defeats the purpose of a small, easy-to-use camera. I tried color correction, but I wasn't that successful at that.

The Hero 3 already comes with the flat lens dive housing so no need to purchase it separately... Heres another one I shot with the hero 2 with the Dive housing... just think the Hero 3 will be even better video quality ! Just make sure the quality is set to 720p

hey guys, what import/export settings are you guys using and with which editing platform? Anyone using adobe premiere? And are any of you guys using different FPS modes like the 60/120/240? Thats where i seem to have issues. Importing a standard 29.94 or 30 FPS clip is fine. Anything else seems to give me problems. Esp in adobe premiere.

I shoot in the highest it will go... I think with the H2 its 1080p 30fps... then I copy all the movies over to the Imac and load it into Imovie. Then I make the movie into 720P since I have the ATV2.

I recently picked up a GoPro 3 Black Edition for diving. Just got back last week from diving in Belize and Cozumel. I took about 90 minutes worth of video at 2.7k res in Cozumel, but had some issues with the 64gb sd card I was using. I ended up losing all my footage.

Fortunately, I used a separate card (8gb) while in Belize and had some footage.

I put together a quick video. The majority was shot with the GoPro 3 BE @ 1080p60fps. Some footage was taken with my point and shoot Canon S95.

So far I would highly suggest the GoPro! It's easy to use and takes great footage. My only grip is around the bugs that still persist with them. There are issues with the protune setting which can cause frequent freezing, as well as other things that need corrected. Nevertheless, still worth the buy, in my opinion.

Also, here are some diving pics from the trip (both Cozumel and Belize): http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2250548

Love all the gorgonians and the sea turtles! And goodby lionfish, lol.

What problems did you have with your SD card? Depending on what happened some or all of the data may be recovered. I've done this a number of times for the photography business I work for.

I was using a brand new 64gb SanDisk SDXC Class 10 microsd card (the same one sold on the gopro website). I didn't format or test it before using it or leaving for the trip (didn't know I'd need to) and experienced strange occurrences when trying to record to it (gopro would freeze, stop recording randomly...this could be the GoPro's fault, as they are having many problems...not sure). Either way, I ended up recording about 60 minutes worth of video to it, going back to the hotel, charging the camera, turning it on again the next day and finding the card was showing nothing had been recorded. After getting home I couldn't get any computer I tried to recognize the card. I'd insert it via card reader or USB, but nothing would happen. The card ended up not being formatted. I tried three different data recovery programs, but no luck, there was nothing on the card. It was either the GoPro messed up and reformatted the card or the video never successfully recorded to the card.

After much research, I've found there are many many problems with 64gb cards. I've since bought a 32gb and have had no issues so far. Live and learn, I'm just glad this happened on a short trip to Cozumel and not my trip this summer while diving the Great Barrier Reef! :lmao:
