Just sharing a few pics of my tank.. transfered from a shallow 30..

Equipment list:
-Deep Blue 80 shallow (48x24x16)
-40 breeder sump
-2 AI hydras
-1 maxspect gyre
-Bubble Magus 180a skimmer
-Speedwave DC return pump
-150W and 100w heater

Likely gonna be about 75% macro/gorgonian/softies.. will have a few montipora and anemones... maybe a few sticks near the top

VERY VERY shallow sand bed.. (20 pounds of sand)... I did build a wall from acrylic in the back that will have 4" of sand for wrasses

Nice! I love those dimensions -- our tank is a custom 48x22x16 and it's so nice and easy to work with.

Can I ask why you decided on such a shallow sand bed? Is it just for aesthetics or is there enough sand to be functional?

I'm also intrigued by your 4" wall of sand for the wrasses and would love future updates on how that works out. The sand in my tank varies from less than half and inch in the corners with the most flow to nearly two inches by the rocks in the middle -- and that's where my leopard wrasse sleeps. She's still small and seems perfectly happy in her sleeping spot (which is in the sand under a rock), but I have thought about trying to add more sand, either localized or throughout the tank, as she grows. A deeper sandbed in the rear of the tank might be the ideal compromise, so I'm excited to hear how it works for you!!

Very cool tank, like the equipment choices, rock work, and unique livestock choices.

formsix, I have had sand sleeping wrasses sleep in a wide array of engineered sand areas as I often run a bare bottom tank. They will find the sand. I've also dug a few out of sand beds for removal and they are almost always sleeping horizontal in the top inch of sand. I'd think you're ok with a 2" sand bed, but you may want have it a little more consistent depth so she doesn't bump her nose or head on her nightly sand dive!

Thanks yall.. I went with a very shallow bed just for maintenance purposes... I stir the sand every night or two and during water changes... trying to keep it clean and white...

The part in the back with the deep sand might not be needed, I have not seen either wrasse dive in that area I think they have found other areas

Removed about 80% of my sandbed.. the bottom is painted white as I anticipated not liking the sand... still a deep spot in the back for the wrasses to sleep...

Also took out the gyre and replaced with two mp10wes

Great looking tank. Just a suggestion. You may want to add a screen lid to keep the firefish in,they are jumpers when spooked.

Can I ask why you took out the sandbed, and the gyre?
I went into this tank knowing I likely would take the sandbed out... that's why I painted to bottom white in anticipation... I just find the barebottom a lot easier to maintain... I am a little OCD about keeping the sand white... so scraping the bottom glass is easier than fighting cyano and dirty sand...

The gyre just wasn't for me.. very strong, very good coverage... but only one direction and a little much for the nems and softies etc... i couldn't get it dialed in how I wanted...

O yea.. I have wrasses too, I use screen tops... they were just off for the pics..
