I finally got one. I had a few minutes before my daughter's Little Gym class and went to the LFS. I went in on the odd chance they would have a mantis shrimp and low and behold they did. It is about 3" long and extremely colorful. Sorry no pictures, our camera is in the car awaiting my son's arrival. He is only a week late!
Anyways he/she has already had 4 confirmed kills and built a burrow with 3 openings. The burrows are underneath 2 rocks (no pvc).
Question: Do I need PVC for a burrow? I know they are prone to shell disease but the shrimp is living underneath the rock.
Thanks.

If he has a place to burrow and get away from the light i would guess that you will be ok without a PVC burrow. Although, I am sure that placing one into the tank would not hurt anything...

from what ive heard peacocks dont use the PVC burrows that much and would rather dig their own burrow, how big is the tank its in? my peacock made its own burrow under its rocks, i would consider buying bulk food for them, i would go to the local supermarket, and get a pound of fresh shrimp, the smallest ones they have, break it in half and thats the size i would give it to eat, just make sure you can get some vitamin enrichment for it like selcon

He is in 29. The tank was set up at the beginning of Sept. and has been cycling ever since. The clean up crew is in trouble because I heard popping up till 2 am.
The cool thing about my set up is I can look underneath the tank and watch him make his burrow.
I will be heading to the seafood store later today for some shrimp etc. (for me too of course!).

Thanks. I have not been home much due to the holidays and the birth of my son! The mantis has settled in though. But he (I believe) decided to make his burrow facing the back wall and I had trouble seeing him. At first I thought he was going to molt but has become active again. I "fixed" the direction of his burrow by moving some rock and it work last night. Today he was back in his original place so we shall see what he does when I get home. He is pretty calm and does not hide when my daughter sticks her nose right up on the glass.
