Got a question for Matt or if any one else knows?

REEF NERD
I was going to try growing some mangroves and i was going to put them in pots. If i used a clay pot should i just clean it and put it in or should it be seasoned in salt water before i put it in.Only reason i ask Matt i know you use them for you clowns. But if any one else knows post away.

You can put them in pots. They will grow in fresh or saltwater, sand or dirt; pretty hardy plants! The only thing that they don't seem to tolerate well are drying out and bug pests (can't exactly spray insecticide over your reef!).

Some unpublished work I did at Keys Marine Lab suggests that they may actually grow faster in freshwater (I'll see if I can find some pics of that).

They tend to become root-bound pretty quickly in smaller pots, as although the foliage grows slowly, the roots grow fast.

Good info Matt but what i was wondering about the pot was do i have to cure it or can it go right in the tank will it throw off my water quality

Ahh, sorry. I don't think it should hurt your reef. We usually soak new pots for a few hours in tapwater and then scrub and rinse them just to be safe and remove dirt, etc. We have corals in some of the tanks, but they aren't exactly SPS reefs. I know several people have introduced flowerpots into their reefs as a spawning site for their clownfish pairs without a problem though.

I hate to say this, but Tim Tebow is a freaking stud... You know he has more passing touchdowns than Dixon of Oregon and more rushing touchdowns than McFadden??? Oh yeah, and the trainers have to stop him from benching more than 425 lbs... lol Rediculous!!! Too bad he plays for U of F...

GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!! :D

I don't know why I thought you were asking about the mangroves, maybe because I had that mangrove swamp setup in the greenhouse, maybe I'm just losing it , but anyway, I did dig up some old stuff for fun.

I collected a bunch of propagules (mangrove seeds) and randomly separated them into groups for testing the effect of substrate and salinity on growth. All were unsprouted, unrooted, (freshly-dropped) and had otherwise identical treatment conditions. Below are two shots of one of the treatment groups.

Propagules grown for 45 days in saltwater:

Same thing in freshwater:

I heard that when the boogeyman goes to sleep, he checks his closet for Tim Tebow.

Yep and Yep :)

You know Matt i bet that is because they dont get enough fresh water. I wonder if you grow them in salt but spray the leaves with fresh that might encourage more growth.... They say Tebow is almost 75% of the offence...And can u say sophomore heisman
