Got a reef Octopus, have questions

Hello,

I just got a brand new Reef Octopus SRO 3000-INT yesterday. i got it all set up and working, but I have a few questions. The material that came with the skimmer doesn't say much at all.

So, i know the reccomended height range of the skimmer, but where is it's sweet spot? Does it vary from unit to unit, or does someone know? Also, why does the manual say to not have the water drain below the surface? Is is just because doing so would have it outside of the reccomended water depth, or is it something else?

Also, how exactly does a skimmer "break in"? I mean, what is the process that makes it work better after its been running a few weeks?

It's only been running for about 12 hours now, but when i got up this morning I was amazed at how much clearer the water is already! It was awesome. It's a new tank, been up for about 3 months now and is a 210 gallon, 7 feel long. Previously, I couldn't see completely through the tank when looking lengthwise, but now, although not crystal clear, I can definately see through the tank and down the hallway. Sweet! It's set at the lowest level right now because I was afraid of an overflow when I went to bed. It pulled only maybe 2 pints worth of brown goo since I set it up last night at 1am.

I also was surprised at how quiet the whole thing is. There is virtually no noise from the pump, and no gurgling noise at all from the venturi line. The fans in the lights and overflow are much louder than the skimmer, which is a world of difference from the old ASM G3 I had years ago in an old tank.

It would be best to post these questions on the Coralvue/Octopus forum here at RC. Jeremy would be able to help you out the best.

Sweet spot will vary on how wet you like to skim

You do not want the exit pipe under water BC it will cause back pressure and cause the skimmer to overflow. This is for any skimmer....

An unvented drain will put backpressure on the skimmer. If you are encountering the gurlging drain water like I did, you can make a submerged drain so long as you vent the top with a hole.

Oils from manufacturing affect its performance, and also skimmers work better as they slime up with bacteria over that time. As quiet as the pump is now, it will also get far quieter over the course of a month.

I am 99% sure it was 1.25" PVC, but it might have been 1.5"

The pipe is a smidge too big for the T on the skimmer, so you can just sand it down to size to make it work.

I also saw a post where someone used a sanitary 1.5" T for it, sanded it down, but fit it over the drain as oppsed to inserting a pipe in.
