Got Apstasia?? Berghia GB

Interesting. I was thinking of getting some of these guys to help with my aptasia problem since my pistol shrimp killed all my peppermint shrimp. I recently bought some lettuce Nudi's to eat hair algea and so far they did a pretty good job along with the snails, hermits and crabs that came with the cleaner pack from reeftopia. Just a few days ago we noticed some small ones coming out and we thought they shrunk because there's not much hair aglea left. But they were babies! The lettuce Nudi's usually park themselves during the day and look for food at night, they don't care where they fall asleep whether its on the glass, rocks or sand.

peppermint work great for me. I bought 2 and they ate 10+ aptasias over night. Something happen and they disappeared :( .. I think my 6 lines killed them  .

Mine is in my refugium where there are some big aptasia. I do see them but the aptasia are there too. Maybe they are eating the smaller ones, I don't know. I usually kill the ones in my tank with kalk paste. They come back in a couple week but you nuke them again. Better than hoping the nudi or the pep to eat them.

My peppermints do a great job. And they don't starve to death after the aiptasias are gone. They don't get sucked into powerheads either.

The trick is to make sure they really are peppermints, then put them in a small tank with aiptasia rocks and no other food. They will get in a habit to hunt for aiptasias. After that, you can put them to work in your main tank.

And they do take down large aiptasias. I've seen them chow down on 2" tall ones several times. Takes them a few days to finish one off, but they can do it.

I'll try that next time I get some peppermints Norman. Maybe I can put them in my sump with a rock with an aptaisia on it. Thanks for the tip! :)

I'm not giving up on my berghias quite yet. They DO eat some aiptasia from my tank. I can only find ONE of them consitently...and this is in a 30 g tank with TWO rocks (and some detritus) on the bottom. I've seen some decapitated aiptasias. I wish I could find more than one nudi, since it would give me hope that they might breed (I've bought EIGHT of them in the last 6 months...at $15 a piece!).

I have no choice but to wait and see. I wish that they were BIGGER when we all go them, maybe they were too young before they were shipped to us?

I'm just going to keep putting aiptasia infested rocks in that tank, since my main tank is basically an aiptasia farm.

Too bad we didn't have a "club house"....we could get the club to buy some and breed them for us.

I was kind of considering setting up my (currently) unused 100g tank with water change-out water and loading it with aiptasia, then sometime in the future (if my current nudi(s) dies) trying the nudis again for the third (and last) time.... if they truly breed, then maybe sell them to club members for a lot less than what they go for online. Of course, i say i'll do a lot of things I never end up doing ... ;)

That's a funny thing - I just bought 1 from my tank and it has disappeared. Are the 6line known to go after shrimps?

I've bought probably 12 peps for 2 different tanks. I've never had one live more than a week. I hate them. Though about half of them did eat aiptasia (before it died).

I have only 3 fish (2 clown and a 6 lines). If the 6 lines didn't eat them, I should see a dead body. My 6 lines is pretty big though. It doesn't bother the cleaner shrimp. Maybe because the cleaners are too big for it.

I think you have to prepare for the nudis. I thought I did, but maybe not well enough. It's best (IMHO) to set a seperate tank where you can put the nudis and aptasia covered rocks. Then when they actually thrive and breed, take some of them and move them into your main tank, that way you'll have "backups". Also, you can sell the offspring.

However, I haven't seemed to have had good luck with them yet, and they're freaking expensive.
