Got my Quoyi Parrot!

After seeing a few thread on here of memebers displaying their Quoyi parrots I decided I had to have one. I contacted Aaron at reefanimals and within a few weeks he had great specimen ready for me. He was great to work with and the fish shipped perfect. Here's a quick cell pic of it in my DT, the colors are amazing.

Don't see a pic, but congrats on the purchase. I too got mine from Aaron at Reefanimals.com. Talked to him on the phone and told him what I wanted and size and he emailed me a few wks later and said he had one for me. Will of had mine a year now in May

Congrats, Man!!! You'll love this fish's personality. They are peaceful, yet don't back down from anybody. Very interactive as well, and you will never have to clean off your powerheads again with this fish around...

Well, now mine literally eats everything from feeder clams, to pellets, to nori, to mysis, to silversides. It literally eats any food I offer.

While in QT it only ate pellets very sparingly at first. It was when it entered the DT that it learned how to eat everything else. My tang taught it how to eat nori, my triggers taught it how to eat feeder clams, and everything else in the tank taught it how to eat mysis...

The parrot, in-turn taught my tang and wrasses how to eat algae off of the rocks and powerheads.

Oh yeah. My parrot also eats the other fish's poop...

One of my favorite fish in the tank, and great janitor as well!!!

Wow he looks great! I am looking for a reputable place to get one when my tank is up. Do you mind if I ask how much he was? They seem to run around $150+??

I highly recommend Aaron at reefanimals. great to work with and gets great specimens. Mine was $99 plus shipping as he is on the smaller side at around 4.5"

That's a beautiful fish. Parrots have been my favorite from my very first scuba dive almost 30 years ago, but I wasn't aware there were any parrots that are suitable for home aquariums since they eat coral and rock, digest the algae, and excrete sand.

After poking around the net a but I understand this one species is considered generally reef safe as it won't eat corals, but people also say it grazes on their rocks. I'd love to get one, and I have a FOWLR tank so no worries about him eating my coral, but would it consume my live rock? That would be a problem (for obvious reasons, but also because I have ReadyReef rock that isn't "real"). Any input from those who have one of these would be appreciated!

Well, good concerns, but nothing to worry about... Mine is in a full reef, and never touches any coral while its grazing on the rock. She picks around the coral.

Also, they may do very, very minimal scraping of the rock they graze on, but nothing that damages the rock in any way. Not even coralline algae is adversely affected. Only side affect so far is clean rocks and powerheads...

I can only speak about the scarus species of parrots. Quoyi, Princess, Striped, etc...

Mine eats jumbo mysis, brine, pellets of all sorts and sizes and nori. I haven't tried the krill or silversides I had bought months ago again recently. He will totally ignore flake food

That's really encouraging. So if it isn't consuming your rock or even your coralline, it must not be "pooping", i.e., excreting sand, like parrots usually do, right? After all, the sand they poop out is just the coral skeleton they have ground up to harvest the algae.

Mine scrapes on the rock some but that doesn't hurt anything, as far as it coming up and eating half of one of your Stoney corals in a sitting, it isn't ever going to happen. They "poop" out sand always

Well, wasn't quite picturing it on that scale ;-) but yes, that's what I was referring to. Cool video. How'd you like to be diving on a reef when that stampede came through?

One of the things I love about this hobby is the constant surprises learning about species, equipment or techniques I've never heard of before. I was a marine science major in college and I know a fair amount about parrots, but never heard of the Quoyi before. I will definitely be on the lookout for one in the future.

I have a feeling this is what you are thinking about...

Completely NOT the case with the Quoyi and/or Princess...
