OK so I have a 6 month old 90 gal tank. I am ready to begin adding coral, Clams, etc to convert it to a full blown reef tank. I started out with about 5-7 mantis Shrimps (Thanks TampaBay Saltwater) I have managed to remove all but 1 (I think) by using a bird wrase, undulated trigger and my overflow. I have been down to this singe shrimp for about 2 months. I need to catch him before I feel comfortable introducing claims and some other items. I have a "Comercial" trap but, need some help. What should I bate it with? Since his location is unknown, where should I put it? How can I keep hermit craps out of the trap? An suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Once I capture him 1st person interested and willing to Pay shipping can have him. I will get a PIC posted so you can decide.

For bait try a dollop of peanut butter (chuncky style seems to work best since they like to break up the remaining pieces of peanut). PLace the bait in the back of the trap. If you hang the trap up in the water column at least six inches above the substrate, the mantis can swim up into it but the hermits won't be able to reach it. Also, it would be best to only put the trap in the tank at night when the stomatopod won't be able to see it (it will be guided by smell) and remove it before dawn. When it is light, it will take one look at the trap and think "How dumb to they think I am!".

O.K., so my heart isn't exactly into catching stomatopods. A small piece of shrimp or cracked snail works well as bait. Because stomatopods like to move along edges, place the trap on the substrate with the entrance touching the edge of a rock that it has access to from its burrow.
