graduating high school soon!

Heck, I had to pay out of state tuition the first year and that was painful. I think back then, the out of state fee alone was almost double the in state resident tuition. No regrets tho.

omeg,
haha that's so funny. i was in revelle college and my major was general bio. maybe i was one of the suckas that had a really really bad experience

give me a break. i am a product of a UC school (UCLA) and my education was top tier. the bottomline is that you get back what you put into it.

Ditto. Met my wife at UCLA too, so another plus. :D

My son just finished his first year at Berkeley, and did COC classes for a year while still in high school, so I feel educated enough to speak about the current state of both systems (or at least part of the system).

For motivated students, JCs are a great way to get general ed requirements out of the way without paying as much money. However, that being said, going to a JC really limits the "college experience," since most JC students are commuters with no real school "loyalty." IMO, part of the college experience is being totally wrapped up in your school and school life for 4 years... and in many cases, it will be the best time on a person's life. Yeah, you can go to class and go home and have nothing to do with school and learn a great deal (much like the JCs), but "growing up" and getting prepared to live in "the real world" while in college is a lot more than that.

As Wilafur said, college is really, really one of those situations where you get out of it what you put into it. Get involved in campus life - the organization doesn't really matter, just do something to get involved.

Good luck.

Kevin

congratulations...its all down hill from there!

JK

lol. actually life begins now. go to college as far away as possible that your parents can afford. just imagine living on your own without having to fork out your own money. life goes downhill after college!

congratulations

Well said Kevin. I totally agreed that those were the best years of my life. Being so far away from home really made me "grow up" as an individual. In fact, I liked it so much that I spent 5 years at UCLA. I figured that I would have to work once I get out, so why not enjoy it a little longer

what did you get your degree in? what are you doing?

i went to cal state LA and i liked it... but i wanted to teach and they have a good ECE program....

I graduated from UCI with a econ degree. Started off with computer engineering haha. I loved college... best 5 years and the funnest five years as well. Probably the most expensive 5 years as well haha. Tuition has gone up quite a bit though and it looks like its going to continue.

when did you go there? not sure what your major was but for the bio program the profs were more focused on their research than their students. none of my physics profs could even speak english.
i graduated from UCLA in 2000.

i also had professors that spoke with thick accents, but after a few lectures you go from understanding 25% of what they say to 50% to 75% to nearly 100%. all in all, my experience was positive, even though i had prof's that were more immersed in their research than teaching.

did you ever go to prof office hours or schedule private sit downs with your profs? all in all, the profs that i had all wanted us to grow and learn in their courses and would go out of their way if the students asked (ok, maybe 90% did).

Re: graduating high school soon!

<<<<<-------Eight years here....I'm a slow learner ;)
A UC education is the best bang for the buck if you are a CA resident. I was back on campus with my wife a few weeks ago. I got teary eyed walking around campus, reminiscing about the good ole' college days.

so tomorrow, thursday, im finally graduating!!! yeh no more high school... so now i can continue with my reef progress! but need to get the $$$ for working full time! hopefully

Congrats!!!! Hope your plans include college. As others have stated, the college years can be as rewarding as you make it.

Leaving southern cali and going up to CAL for college was one of the best decisions I've made. Opened my eyes and living in Berkeley(and getting that college experience) really changed my outlook on life and people. Go Bears!

Kevin since I'm a cal alum and your son is there do I get discount on that anemone I'm going to pick up one of these days? :D

You're graduating from dbhs? Wow awsome. I miss my teachers in hs.

Drop by my place sometimes. Free frags for ya. :D

I was part of UCLA's Rally Committee (as was my wife). Ever hear the "Dirty Golden Bear" version of the Cal fight song? :D

My son is a member of CalRal. Things get, um, interesting around our house when it's UCLA versus Cal. Not quite as bad as UCLA versus U$C, but still pretty intense (probabaly because the rest of the PAC-10 schools aren't really worth considering :eek2: - although my son will argue that everyone needs to hate Stanfurd :D ).

I was at the ucla/cal footgame last year and I have to say it was a pretty crazy game. I was actually pretty ****ed that we didn't win since we were up by like 2 tds in the first half..and we let it slip away. The pac 10 tourny championship game at the staples center was a little different though. You guys had that in the fridge from the 1st quarter. I was at the game and I was just groaning the whole time. I wanted to leave early....especially since I was surrounded by the whole ucla campus.
