Gray hills in DSB?

I recently completely tore down and rebulit my tank about a month or so ago. Sand bed is at about 4 inches and this is in my 150 tall. Previously there had been some dead areas but I rinsed the sand thoroughly several times (6-8) and added new sand as well. I now have 3 small hills about an inch that are dark grey but no where near black. Should I gently disturb these areas? Any input appreciated!:strange:

I would leave them alone, you dont want to disturb the sand bed too much. Even when i clean my tank i only brush over the surface of the sand bed if its getting a little crusty.

I know you are not to disturb dsb at all....just hoping these won't turn into dead areas again. I had several more and the color eventually lightened. I am relatively new to dsb's and sure don't want to have to tear down again! Thanks Deepsea! Anyone have other input ?

I personally vacum my sand bed. Every 3 months I clean up one section of the sand. Then the next time I clean it, it is a different section. It gives the sand bed a chance to recover because it only gets disturbed once a year. So it keeps the sand clean and every thing is well.

on a normal sand bed yes you should vacuum the sand bed, but wth a DSB you shouldnt disturb anything above to first 1 inch of sand. I say just leave it
