Great camera, decent lens or vice versa?

Well, I think I've come to the conclusion that I will need a DSLR to get the detail I want picture wise. What I would like your opinion on is, if you had to choose which would you prefer. A decent camera with a great lens or a great camera with just a decent camera. I would mainly be using the camera for my tank and maybe a few outdoor (yard critters). I saw a good deal on a used canon d20 which got my thinking get an older camera and spend twice as much on the lens or just get a newer mid range (price wise) DSLR with kit lens and upgrade the lens waaaayyyy down he road. Any and all opinions appreciated thanks in advance.

Decent camera, best lens you can buy. You can pick up a good used body pretty cheep. Put your money into good glass.

Decent body, great lens is the way to go. If you only want a single lens, really really do your research before buying.
