Great deal at Sea Schor

Sea Schor was having a 15% off livestock sale today and I picked up a beautiful Chevron Tang for $40.00!!!

They also had a Lyretail Hogfish.....striking fish, I have never seen or heard of this fish before, I was very tempted but the fellow helping me wanted to double check with the owner on the reef compatability and called the owner and said that the hogfish could take out some of my cleaner crew....so I passed...but it was a very cool looking fish!

Hi Sterling,
Where is that store located? I tried to find it on mapquest, when I got to where it told me to go, there was no fish store!
Thanks!

They recently moved to their new location, perhaps the address you had was their old one. They are on the south side of Dundee Road, east of Buffalo Grove Road, I think the address was 440 W. Dundee Road.

wow, I have been looking for a chevron for a good price like that. was the sale only for today? did they have any more chevrons?

Sea Schor is a great place for fish and corals. I picked up a small blonde naso tang to eat some of the macro that has been growing in my tank for only $20. Christams wrasse $21. Their prices are hard to beat. Anthony is also a great person to talk to if you have questions, he has given me nothing but great advice. They also have great prices on clean up crews, emeralds $3. Last week when I was in I couldnt believe some of the SPS they had in, makes me want to start an sps tank.

Hi fishman, everythings goin' pretty well. Guess I really need to get over to Sea Schor. How often do they have sale like this?

Fishman, I'm great....I keep meaning to call and stop with that yuma polyp I said I'd bring, I never get over that way......so you put a Chevron in your tank? cool...

hansnfrans every month or two they have a good sale. if you go there have them sign you up on the mailing list and you will get flyers on the sales. sterling hope all is well and whenever you get by is ok . the chevron is eating like a pig and doing well hope yours is the same.nice to hear from both of you. if either of you need any live rock or sps/zoas marshallman is getting in a monster shippment this week and it sounds like great stuff. i will probably swing by his place thurs/fri and check it out. thanks

Ya know I'm actually really dissapointed in Sea Schor....

My father is setting up a 12nc. It's been running for a couple months now, we had added some corals and those have been doing well. He had been chomping at the bit to add his first marine fish, which was going to be a clown and stopped by sea schor to check some out... which based on feedback I had seen here I figured would be OK.
..however, apparentely Anthony there suggested a flame angel instead... again this was for a 12gal nanocube. My father was real clear on the system he was looking for a fish to place into and was told the flame angel was just fine.
Real bad suggestion IMO.
I'm going to file sea schor under "just another fish store to be avoided". Nice display tank to go look at... spend your money elsewhere.

I think Anthony's advice for a flame angel was a good idea. The flame angels they have there are the size of a dime! And when I was there tonight, the only clowns they had were tomato clowns which would own that tank! Just my opinion.

So... that he didn't have the fish my father was looking for justified selling him a fish that is not suited for the system he had becuse it is small and will fit into the tank moment? ..was he out of shark eggs or something? That could have fit in the tank this week, why not sell him one of those?
Sorry, but that's real bad advice.

Out of every LFS I have been to Anthony has always given me great advice. Yes he told me to put a blonde naso tang in my 55 to eat my macro algea. The fish was tiny, he said when its done eating my macro, and before it gets too big for the tank, for me to bring it back and trade it for any fish in the same price range. By avoiding Sea Schor you will be missing out imo. Flame angels get to be around 4 inches when fully grown, clown fish will be the same size. IMO it is cruel to put anything other then very small fish that dont get bigger then 1-2 inches in a 12 gallon. But dont think that a flame angel will get bigger then 90% of the clowns out there.

.......there are reasons other than the size of the fish to consider what system is suitable.

I'm sorry, but shops that sell fish on the premise of "trade it in when if gets too big" are probably doing something wrong... in particular I find it dissapointing that they dished out info like this when they know they are suggesting and selling that fish to a new hobbyist.

...if as your example of the naso in the 55 to clean up some algae kinda hints at, this is they type of thing anthony does on a regular basis then no, I really don't think I'll be missing out on anything by not doing buisness with his shop.

So your saying that a 4-6 inch aggressive clown is better then a 4 inch dwarf angel in a 12 gallon? I think its great when a LFS lets you take a fish to do a job in your tank and says whenever you want bring it back for credit or another fish. Its called having a relationship with your customers.

Do you have some kinda financial interest in sea schor or something? This turned into a six inch aggressive clown? lol.
I'm talking about a single perc which would be the only fish in the tank. I know of many successful systems that are stocked liked that. I don't see lots of flame angels in 12 gallon nanocubes... I wonder why? ...if you know of anyone doing that successfully please pass that information along. I'd like to see it.

The point is this was a bad recommendation that can have a negative impact on a new hobbyist. Suggesting and selling someone a fish that needs considerably more room than at 12g cube will provide and on top of that an angel that just might decide to tear up the tanks coral is probably not the way to "build a relationship" with a customer. More likely its a way to unload stock you happen to have on hand to make a quick buck that winds up frustrating and discouraging a beginner. That kind of frustration is what keeps people out of the hobby.
..if it were an employee I might cut the shop some slack, but it was the owner. That makes it a shop to pass on in my opinion.

i dont think its really a size issue......i dont know to many hobbists that would add a flame angel as their FIRST fish no matter what size the tank is..??? Flame angels dont have the best track record....

I got the idea that the reason it was bad advice is because of the size. A flase percula and a flame angel end up max 4 inches. Niether of them belong in a 12 gallon tank IMO. I do have stock in Sea schor, and I also have stock in Sharkysreef, Oceansfloor, Jimmysreef, Coral Paradise, and Sho-Tank.
