Great Read PART II

+1, maybe the dude can write an article blaming the chinese guy that invented gunpowder for all of the shooting deaths in this country. There's a caveman that discovered how to make fire some millions of years ago, we could blame arson on him.

Cameras don't rip people off, scamming idiots that happen to have cameras rip people off. Without the camera they'd just be doing it some other way because that's the kind of people they are. Disappointing read on part 2, expected better.

I agree with what was written about the macro photography. While corals look really cool in macro shots, I'd never buy one based on a macro pic because I like to look at my tank from a few feet away, not through a microscope.

Bravo and incredibly true.

Heh. It was a rhetorical device, blaming the SLR guys. Of course the author knows that the DSLR and photoshop are just the tools. I found it a mildly diverting read on a subject where I already agreed with his main points. But then, for about 95% of articles like this, the target audience are the people that agree with the central point.

Those who are disappointed here are simply annoyed that he didn't lay into who they wanted him to lay into yet. Give him time, maybe he's building up to it. Either that, or he's making the point (as others are hinting at above) that we're all to blame for this in some way or another as we salivate over the most amazing macro shots/try to attempt the same with our own corals. Keeping coral is to an extent a cult of beauty for a large part. Even if you refuse to buy into the LE craziness, you benefit from the same hobby, with the same drivers, just with a different pathology and level of madness.

Kind of like me benefiting from the low interest rate I got for my mortgage and railing against people who borrowed too much money in the sub-prime crisis or the banks themselves. Yes, I behaved more responsibly than others and wasn't out to make a quick buck, but I still indirectly benefited from the industry I was criticizing.

Just my 4 cents (what? I was long-winded, 2 cents wasn't enough).

I'll have to respectfully disagree. I am not to blame for these prices or macro pictures.:D I have never bought into the mentality of either. I know of a lot of people who can name every polyp that has a name and can take some of the best super macro pictures ever, but they have also crashed more tanks, killed more polyps and still us a Hydrometer to check the salinity of a tank with thousands of dollars worth of corals in them. Which is more important, names/pics/profits or having the knowledge to grow them and better yet, keep them alive. I am not a collector, I'm a reefer. The only manner in which I benefit from the above practices is if I support the behavior and practice said behavior across the board....I don't.

What I truly like about RC is that guys like you and I can agree to disagree and not launch firey darts at each other. After all, it's just our opinions, right?

BTW, I see you're from Japan. I hope you're ok. Stay safe my friend.

Nikon and Cannon didnt give the corals retarded names though. Names sell. Pics are one factor/component of buying a product.

You dont show a pic of a coral to lil timmy but you just tell him the name i find he will jump no matter what. Pictures are just a side salad the NAME is the meal.

Respectful disagreement is all good. :)

I should be clear as well. I'm not saying everyone is to blame (personally) for the inflated prices etc. But the hobby has certain characteristics as a result of its central tenets. If it were simply a hobby about the wonder of keeping difficult to keep creatures alive in an aquarium, then we'd as likely be keeping horseshoe crabs as we would Acropora. But, IMO, it's the inherent beauty of coral that makes reefkeeping so popular. So, a hobby with that as one of its driving forces inevitably creates distortions like the LE coral craze.

All the advice put out in this forum (including by you Mucho) is exactly what's needed to stop those worst tendencies getting out of hand. But we have to be aware that our own desire for the best looking coral and to show off our own corals in the best possible light have the potential to add fuel to the fire. So, I stop buying from vendors that I know manipulate how their coral looks. I keep myself to a strict budget. I avoid getting pulled into the naming craze, despite how stunning some of the corals look and my desire to identify what I have as accurately as possible. Every single one of us has the potential to be a brake on it as much as part of the problem.

Hope that's a little clearer. I was trying to make a point about personal responsibility.

Oh, and thanks for the good wishes. I'm fine, as is everyone in Tokyo I'm guessing. It was a tough few weeks for various reasons, but my problems over that time were as nothing compared to the poor souls in the north who lost their lives, or their nearest and dearest, communities and towns.

Thanks for the great dialogue my friend.

In my opinion, reefing has always been popular. I think distortion denotes confusion and lack of clarity, but there isn't any. They're lies as there is no such thing as LE. It's but one of 4 labels created and applied that equals more money for the seller. Thus, these popular corals are now highly profitable ones.

LOL, wow, I wish I did have that kind of power to say something and have everyone listen and follow me, but I don't.:D I agree with you in that reefing as it relates to zoas and palys has been reduced to having the best and showing off the best to impress everyone. Much respect to you for having that ability to pump the brakes and say no to those who manipulate the appearance of their corals and keeping within your budgetary constraints. I also admire the fact that you haven't been "pulled into the naming craze". Trust me, I put the brakes on as soon as the names and high prices began back in 05/06. We agree after all.

Hope that's a little clearer. I was trying to make a point about personal responsibility.

Yes it is, and thank you.

OMG, you can't catch a break. Just heard that a 7.4 earthquake just hit Miyagi, Japan and that a Tsunami warning has been issued for the north east coast. One to four waves are predicted. My heart goes out to you man, your family and Japan. Stay safe my friend, you're still in our thoughts and prayers. Suddenly, this thread and the above topic doesn't mean anything. Let us know how you are when you can. Gonna drop you a PM as well.

Thanks both, much appreciated. Shaken and stirred again, but safe and no breakages (though watching your tank shake is not good for the nerves as images of glass breaking/seams busting run through your head!). Thankfully minimal damage in the north as well it seems.

Mehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

People rip themselves off. Those are the ones that dont do thier homework prior before buying a product. Has nothing to do with the camera man "shady people" the vendor JF. Tyree. the milkman Mike Tyson whoever. Do research. pics/prices compare FEEDBACK forums....

If its shady or "scamming idiots" then dont buy! or if its overpriced the pic is chopped dont buy. Why is it so hard for people to grasp that concept?. If your not smart enough to read up who you are buying from as well as the price. AND YOU STILL BUY?. Its on you.

Theres "scamming idiots" in every nook and cranny of this planet. No matter where you go. Its up to you to step over thier mines and filter the bs from the good stuff. Cant hold everyones hand all the time. People need to get off the teet and open thier eyes.

Just saying if your "NEW" please take advantage of this forum there are a tons of good peeps here with a rediclious amount of 411..
