i cant seem to control this algea growth, its rediculous, just started having this problem a couple months ago and its driving me nuts,i have a 55 gallon in wall tank with 120lbs of rock ,a multi skimmer deluxew/uvsterilizer 5 watt just replaced the bulb and a hot mag w/carbon /all hobdoes any body have a clue on how to control this, its nasty?,

First thing is to determine what you're doing to feed it. Common causes of GHA thriving are:

Poor lighting (old lights, bad spectrum)
Overfeeding
Lack of flow
Poor water quality (tap water, bad RO/DI filters)

Search out Bryopsis to see if that is what you have (likely) and some common methods for removal. However, until you determine what the root cause is, you won't do anything but spend a LOT of time trying to fix something unsuccessfully.

i just got new light fixture in feb,48"aquatic 4 bulb t5s in feb.the water flow is the same for 1 yr and a half i get ro water from theLFS once a week and about 40 hermit crabs i feed 1 cube of brine a day should i cut that in half?

Have you checked your LFS water for nitrates and phosphates? Just because your getting ro doesnt mean its the best. ro/di works better. I would first test this with a salifert test get.

secondly, do you have a sump with macro algae in it? If you dont have chaeto or caulerpa in a sump or refugium I would look into that.

This isnt a cure for the hair algae but it helps. Mexican Turbo Snails. They plow through hair algea and sometimes this is needed to keep it in check until you figure out whats going on.

How about phosphate remover (GFO). Do you run this? If not you can buy a bag of GFO and stick it in your water under flow and it will start removing phosphates which GHA feed off of. You will want to get a GFO reactor eventually.

Let us know!

What do you have in your tank for fish?

If you just have hermits in your tank, don't feed them anything for the time being. Let them eat the algae.

Additionally, having your own RO/DI system is VERY beneficial because then you KNOW the water is good. Just buying it from the grocery or the LFS gives you no real guarantees on quality.

Large mexican turbos (the size of golf balls) will plow through algae pretty quickly, but if it is Bryopsis, you can eradicate it much easier and quicker using Kent Tech M (please do search out Bryopsis on the forum here and read more).

But again, what else do you have in the tank??

it is ro/di that i buy no i dont have a GFO reactor i built a sump just got to plumb it my in sump skimmer pump is broke and i got laid off,i have a berlin red sea skimmer any diy ideas for a skimmer pump i got 3 submersable pumps laying around rio1400,mag drive, and a maxijet 1200?

i have 1 blue hippo 2 false perc.clowns 1 pseudo,2 dragonets 2 emeralds 1 coralbanded shrimp, 1 porcelencrab ,turbos, lps and softies +the crabs

I would test for nitrate and phosphate to start. With out those readings we really cant tell you where to go?

new t5 fixture huh, how long are you running the lights? make sure lights are on for no more than 6 hours a day and then gradually increase the lights cycle.

i had it on 12 hr blue 10 hr white and 12 hr led. now i have it on 10 hr blue 8 hr white and 14hr led

i just buffed my kh and my ph today ,i just got finished dosing cyano that i had so on my next water change sun.or mon. i will know

Yeah I had a problem before similar to yours. In the end I was just feeding it too much light. After decreasing the light hours for a while and doing a few 80 percent water changes it left me alone
