Have a mated pair of green mandarin in my 200 gal reef. Male has been in the tank 1 year and young female added approx 3 months ago. Female very emanciated when purchased, now fat and happy. Witnessed mating dance according to other published articles. Female has very protuding stomach area. Could this be eggs or does she and male release eggs/sperm? Any info on how mandarins care for eggs/egg sack?

OK, so:
1. Female's protruding stomach - my female often looks like she swallowed a marble on the days she spawns.
2. Female releases eggs, male releases sperm. They are scattered and are loose but "sticky"...there will be clumps of eggs stuck together. You'll never see the eggs unless you have the pumps turned off prior to their actual spawning...the eggs float and will quickly disappear down any overflow. The eggs are TINY!
3. No parental care, it's all up to you and I'll tell you now it's REALLY REALLY TOUGH...longest I've had a baby go is around 10 days. By all means at least try collecting and hatching the eggs...I'm really curious to hear if you have some fantastic hatch rate or if it's more along the lines of what I'm getting (i.e. 1% hatch on average)

If you think they're going to spawn, simply shut off all the pumps shortly before the lights go out and make sure you have the actinics or moonlights or whatever ON and whatever else is in the room off...you may be stuck watching for an hour, but it's not all that boring the first few times...getting upwards of 30 spawns though it gets a little old
