There's a very good chance that the fish is still there depending on a few things.

1. Did it go through a QT? If this fish was new to the store, it might have died if left in the store for a couple of days because of disease, parasites or stress due to poor shipping.
2. How's your lid? Not the most notorious jumpers but it happens.
3. What's other fish do you have? Looking for potential bullies.
4. What are your water parameters? All others may look good but a new fish can be more susceptible to quality issues.
5. Have any other small fish go missing in recent history? Hitchhikers find their way in sometime and can do real damage.
6. How much rock work do you have? I used to work at a LFS and we had one in our 125 reef that was stacked with rock--I might see that fish once a week.

Good luck

I qt for 4 weeks and wp are good it is a sps tank there is over a 175 pounds of rock.the fish are peaceful when he went in they did not even look at him. The top is screened in. Will hope to see him soon. Thanks for the replies

How old was your system before you got one? I was thinking of adding one but my system is brand new and I know it needs to be an older system before you even attempt to get one.

it depends on the mandarin. some of them are more gregarious than others. although if he's new, he may just be a little shy as he adjusts.

they have a funny way of not being seen sometimes. even in my 75 gallon i sometimes had to search for a few minutes to locate mine, in my 150 it sometimes takes even longer.
