Green Powdery Algae

I've got this weird powdery green algae that if you clean with a tooth brush it disappears straight away. What causes this and how can I treat it. I have read it could be silica but where is this coming from as I still use the same water source? The only thing changed was my Sand to H2O.

I moved this thread to the New to the Hobby forum as more appropriate here.

Silicate is required by diatoms to form their shells, but diatoms mostly seem to be brownish to yellowish. What does the tank have for a cleanup crew?

That would be green algae.

From my understanding its normal, its healthy, your cleanup crew will /never/ make it all go away, but they'll pick at it. Or at least, mine do. Leave it alone on your rocks, use a scraper if its on your glass before it gets too thick. Your turbos will probably leave interesting little trails through it on the glass
