Greenwater

I have never, ever been able to grow phytoplankton. Rotifers, yes, copepods and amphipods, no problem... but not greenwater. It just stays pale green and never goes anywhere.

My very neglected "holding tank" finally just got too dirty and I wasn't planning on setting up a real tank any time soon. Then I got a dinoflagelette outbreak... WAY too dirty in there. The usual cures didn't help, so I pulled out the sand bed which was quite old and hasn't been alive since the cross-country move and added fresh sand. Ta da! Dinos gone.

But a couple of weeks later I find myself with green water. Maybe I should culture some of this stuff... at least I can grow THIS algae.

I have been growing phytoplankton for a while. I deeply believe it is vital for a healthy marine environment. I add a lot daily ( about 5-10x what most recommend).

I have about 2 gallons that I need to harvest soon as it is beyond dark green! maybe we can work something out and you can get some of it to try in your tank.

Congratulations, Nicole ?! LOL After so many years, finally you mastered the skill to spontaneously produce green water :D

I had the EXACT same problem growing green water when I first got started..Ask Tomoko mine stayed a very light green.. I changed my lights no help.. Thought maybe it was to cold or to hot in the room, Neither helped. Switched to tap water insted of RO no help.. Then I decided to add more fertilizer.. Ta-da Very Dark green water in about a week!

The irony is I have no need for greenwater any more. Then again, I don't need a tank that looks like a phyto lab either. :) Actually, it's more brown than green. Looks nasty in there and the pH is a little high, but all the inhabitants look peachy and I swear my neon green leather has increased size by 50% in the last two weeks.

Come to think of it, I also switched bags of salt right then. Same case as the bag before but the salt had turned into a giant block and I've been breaking it up. Maybe I ought to do a big water change with a different bag and see what happens?
