Hello all! New to saltwater and enjoying every minute of it. I have been in the freshwater hobbie for a few years and my wife asked me to start a coral reef. I really did not want to because I knew that it was expensive. In March of this year I started a 6.5 nano with a purple fire fish, green star, brown button polyp, and a green moon sps (bought on accident thought it was a mushroom, my knowledge has changed since that time). After fighting with ph problems I started looking for a new bigger tank.

I found a 40 gal all in one for $40 and I jumped on the deal. I have been doing my own upgrades from reading forum posts, internet research, and books. I am currently going to college for engineering and decided to try it out with my tanks.

Our current system is the 40 gal with a DIY overflow to a 55 gal DIY sump with display macro garden. Our livestock is as follows

Fish:
Purple fire fish
Cardinal Bengai
Red scooter blenny
Yellowtail blue damsel (lives in the macro garden)

Inverts:
Cerith snails
Nassarius snails
Red and blue leg hermits
Gtba
Sand sifting star
Stomatella snail
Emerald crab
Peppermint shrimp (macro garden)

Coral:
Green moon sps
Nuclear green zoa
Pink zoa
Green finger
Green star polyp
Brown button polyp
Sympodium
Royal blue mushroom

Macro:
Dragons breath
Dragons tongue(very small)
Mermaids fan
Fern cali
Ulva
Red gliceria
Spiny algae
Halimeda
Chaeto

I will get some pics up as soon as I can get some good shots. I wanted to go to the Halloween party but was already busy. I hope to meet everyone at the next meeting.

Welcome. I too spent many years with FW planted tanks. I then started a SW reef tank with the help of a friend who has a wealth of knowledge. He is still my go to guy for questions.

I have them in a separate display. I also have a the 6.5 running with trimmings and some snails on a separate system. The 6.5 is more for breeding snails and to make frags of macro.

Nice. Let me know how the macros grow. I am thinking of culturing some of the red algae and ulva and would like to know your experiences before starting myself.

Thanx for the pic.

I was thinking of doing a thread on the build and also give monthly updates with pictures. I will be upgrading the lights more as time goes on. I have 5 tanks in my apartment and I am working on another project that I will be posting about as soon as I get the approval granted from the property owner. The next upgrade I am buying is for my freshwater so it will be a few months till I do anymore improvements on my salt system.

I am in Chandler. I troll a few different apps looking at all aquatic deals. For instance there is a 180 gal for 140 which is the best price I have seen in a while. I also look at equipment regularly especially lights.

Side note: macros are doing good my fern caulerpa sprouted a new branch. The others are starting to get a beautiful red color.
