Griffis Angel?

I haven't been able to find a lot of info about this fish. Anyone here have any experience or opinions about keeping one?

Thank you Dmorty217. I haven't kept a bandit either but there seems to be more info on them. Slightly cooler water? I've seen them in peoples SPS reefs, so I'm hoping the griffis will be o.k. as well

Griffis are cool in their own right... lol they are a bit goofy looking when they are big.
Most come from Christmas Island, but occasionally come from Marshalls as well.

They do fine as long as they are collected properly. They are deeper water, so decompression issues can arise.

the808state- Thank you, this is the second time I've read that they look funny/goofy as adults, haha. I'm intrigued

Most angels will only eat and pick at unhealthy corals

Almost always, true, yes. But something people often forget to consider.... what if your tank has a bad day, week, month? And corals aren't happy for a while. Well, things might not go so great now that you have the unhealthy-coral-cleanup-crew already in the tank. :)

Just something to consider, to those considering angels in their reef.

Had one in my reef years ago would pick the tips off acro sometimes. Didn't bother euphlyia or scolymia. Just have to feed Angels heavy to keep from nipping corals. Here is an old pic of him

93Foxstang- thank you for the pic and info

I ended up bringing one home and had it in my QT for a few days with some SPS frags and mini colonies. She picked on them relentlessly all day, so I've decided not to put this fish into my display. Bummer, because I was really fond of her.

How big is the QT compared to your display? Also, how did you plan to properly QT the fish with SPS in the tank? The fish may be picking coral due to size of QT and the fact that there are corals right there to tempt it to pick. In a larger reef tank, as many other RC members have shown on these forums; Angels aren't necessarily as destructive as they are portrayed.

My experience with Griffis is that they can get the same bacterial infections as Bandits due to "pinning" the swim bladder. However I found that the Griffis took to eating quicker and to tank life easier than Bandits. I lost mine when it jumped and landed on the top of the tank and got fried by MHs.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I'm sorry you lost yours, they are very cool fish. I am in the process of upgrading tanks and I have several holding tanks and two medicated QT running, it's been a lot of work. The Griffis was in a 55 gallon with about 10 pounds of rubble along with two small female flame wrasses. The plan was to observe for a few weeks, at which time the fish in my other QTs would have been through their treatment. I was planning on transferring it and treating with cupramine and then prazipro. It was eating everything I put in the tank and didn't seem to be shy when I would approach. I always feed 5+ times a day when my fish are in QT. I decided to put some corals in there just to see what happened, as I've done with some of my other angels, and that's when I realized that unfortunately this fish might not work in my new DT.

baby ones (under 2") are very very cool. But near impossible to get. The average is 4-5" that I get, which is a good average size to start with. I have seen them in the 9-10" range... very boisterous.
