my ground probe is 9"

how much of it needs to be submersed to work properly?

I dont want to suction cup it into my sump because it will for sure fall in

is it ok to only have 3-4" underwater?


also, can I just remove the center screw of the outlet cover, and put the ring in there, or do I have to actually use the green grounding screw (i.e. flip the breaker and pull out the entire outlet)?

The 3" should work fine but is there a concern if it would fall into your sump?

I would look at your outlet and see if that screw goes into plastic or metal. If it screws into the metal body then you should be good but it's always best to put it where it's recommended.

Mine is totally submerged.
Any amount of it in the water will work, so 3 to 4" would be fine.
I'd use a wall outlet tester to make sure the outlet is wired correctly, turn off the circuit, then use a multi-meter to check the continuity from center screw to the ground prong hole.
I put my probe in the tank and not the sump so that I KNOW any stray voltage in the tank is going directly through the probe to ground and not having to rely on any electrical path through flowing water.

thanks gbecker, I dont have a single piece of equipment in the tank, its all in the sump


capo, I have it cable tied to a cable tack pounded into my stand, there's no way it could fall...I wanted a way to avoid using the suction cup

I have thought about it but, I thought someone in this group about a year ago was having problems with theirs putting elc. back to the tank.

Unless its hooked up wrong I don't see how that could happen.

lonnie, there is only 1 wire connected to the probe...at the other end is a ring connector that attached to a ground

I have seen some that have all 3 prongs (the 2 main prongs must just be dummies so that it'll fit in an outlet)

so the only thing connected is the ground, so theres no way it could possibly put elec into the water

If it was "putting current in", then it was just completing a ground and letting whatever leaking device that was in the tank make a circuit. Better it than you reaching in and completing the circuit.
