i recently changed my bulbs on my frag tank to all blue + is this ok can u grow with just blue + or should i just add a coral + (white bulb) to be safe ?

basically what im asking is can i use just blue lighting to grow frags ??i actually have alot of acans and chalices also in my frag setup is why i like the bluer

I would think the chalices and like will be fine. I ran with nothing but blues for a while and everything lived. Don't know about growth rates though. A lower kelvin may help speed up the growth.

LPS love blue bulbs. Blue+ aren't that blue anyway - not like 20,000K or actinics. I ran an LPS tank with only 20,000K bulbs and it was awesome. Growth on SPS is much slower though. ;)

Blue+ are far bluer than 20k... If you like the way it looks you should be fine, but I wouldn't be able to stand it and 1 coral+ to every blue+ is about as blue as I would ever go.

Maybe my perception is off from looking at way too many LEDs lately, but my tank with only Blue Plus running looks just a bit bluer than Phoenix 14K halides. I wouldn't say Blue Plus is bluer than 18K or maybe 20K if my eyes are numbed to blue nowadays. Haha.

Here's the spectral output of the ATI Blue Plus after 100 hours burn in. Very nice and blue. Light on a reef isn't typically limited to this small blue spectrum until a depth of 80-100 feet, shallower in water with high turbidity.

This graph is self explanatory I hope. The Blue Plus bulb offers a small fraction of what's shown here.

The Phoenix 14k is actually bluer than 20k when run with any standard ballast.

Peter I am mistaken, my bulbs are the Aquablue Special. They are quite white...I think labeled as 15K. My LPS tank has 2 ABS and 2 B+ and this combo looks a lot like Phoenix 14k halides. This combo isn't good for SPS growth.

World Wide Corals run 4 Blue tubes, 2-3 Blue LED's and 1 white tube (white for 5 hours only). The colours of their corals is pretty awesome.
