Growout contest jan 4th to aug. 10th

Mine is coloring up the opposite. The red looks really good already but the green is more yellow than anything. I think there might be a new little baby bump starting on mine but I'm not real sure yet.

Understandable but in general I've always had better /faster growth with more than 1 head. Seems to me the more polyps you start with the quicker it is to acclimate and grow.

While I don't have a lot of zoa growing experience I would agree with you. It seems to just make sense.

You have more tissue to work with allowing more heads to grow from the base.

My third head looks like it's about to open. The main head has stretched itself towards the light a whole lot in the last few days too, which is odd IMO since I'm running two t5's and two kessils for 9hrs a day.

Interesting. I know Carlos run his lights for a good amount of time and lookalike you do the same. Why wouldn't you if you ran LEDs right? I run my MH only 4 hrs a day and the t5 hr prior and hr after.

Finally getting a little bump also=).

@dragonvale you only run your lights for 6 hours? I've always been at least 9 hours myself now I'm running a total of 10 hours with a 2 hour offset. Interesting that you run such a short cycle but obviously it works by your growth shots in you thread =) . Reasons?

Yeah I have the kessils turned down also. I plan to leave them about where they are(60%Blue/30%White) and add an hour or more over the next month or two. I'd rather run less light for a little longer simply to allow me longer to view the tank throughout the day.

Funny you ask. Then I started thinking why do I run them like that LOL. I've grown accustomed to my 250 gallon tank running 3 x 250 and t-12's for supplemental lighting. I guess when your almost putting out 1000 watts in lighting you tend to get creative. So my supplemental turns on at 5pm halides at 6-10 then 10-11pm supplemental. Basically it's on when I get home from work to enjoy the tank :) Plus I run at night for heat related reason especially the summer.

Gotcha lol.. I can understand the power bill lol. Honestly I think one of the main reasons I run mine as long as I do is so I can enjoy them longer when I'm home also. I've never gone less than 8hrs though and I was always under the impression to run at least that. Goes to show there's always more ways to have a successful reef than you think =).

I'm hoping by the next check in on the grow out I'll have a baby showing at least lol.

Mine are still the dullest paly in my tank, but I have a new head open and another along the way. I'll try and submit a pic later.

I read an article a little while back that broke down how corals only need 6hrs of darkness to properly photosynthesize the light they are getting. Makes me wonder if you could acclimate a tank to run 6hrs on and 6hrs off, creating two photo periods a day.

I've done that Steve. Run 2 photoperiods a day. For me it was to more rapidly acclimate my light starved corals back to their original photoperiod after I moved.

There have been discussions about two photoperiods per day in the sps forum.

Without specific need to do otherwise, I'm an at least 8 hour+ photoperiod guy. My tank looked great when I was running my mhs 10 hours a day with an hour of t5 on each end, basically a 12 hour photoperiod.
