Growout tanks

I have my first batch of onyx perc larvae in my 10g rearing tank right now and getting ready to setup a growout system.

I am wondering if I could use some 15g acrylic tanks for this purpose. I picked them up at an lfs that closed down, they are the stackable kind.

I currently have 4 proven pairs including maroons and Percula varieties. Am I better off going the route of several smaller tanks to keep the offspring separate or can they all be housed together in a 75g for growout.

If I used the 15g tanks (5) I would plumb them all into a large 60g plus sump.

To start, I'm setting up 10 x 10g tanks plumped to a 55g sump.

I've been waiting for someone to answer you... it's a good question and I'd like to hear some more input on it. I would assume it depends on the level of your filtration as to how many fish you can keep per gallon. I think I recall reading on a site that breeders prefer 20s - and that those can be divided into 10s if/when needed but I don't remember if htat was for grow-out or for the broodstock.

But really - I doubt it matters much.. total gallons and filtration (along with ease of upkeep of water quality) are probably king along with what you have available and what is most cost effective. I would assume that 'acceptable' water quality is probably debatable by breeders too... which might affect the answers you get to you question.

I 're-found' the resouce I referenced before. I don't think I'm allowed to post it here. It did state that many breeders like the 20's. It sounds like many use 10's though and I guess can leave full batches in a 10 as long as it's not a 'huge' batch.

I just found a used 100gal for $30 that I think I'm going to divide up and turn into grow-out cubes. Trying to think through exactly how to set it up now...

Ok cool, I think I'll go the 15g route then and use one of those 100g Rubbermaid stock tanks as a sump.

I have a 100g acrylic that I was thinking about using but I can't imagine having to catch fish in it without dividing it up which I dont want to do. Plus I'm sure the maroons would end up kicking some Percula *** lol

You can keep quite a few 200+ in a 20 gallon successfully.

15g acrylic display tanks work fine, it makes for easy separating by age for feeding. larger sumps are always nice and make up for the smaller water volume.
