I've been keeping an eye on my gsm the last couple of days. i have knowticed that the female has an abnormaly large bellly and a slight protrusion in front of the anal fin. I was wondering if she is about to lay eggs.

she seems to be having a bit of a problem swimming. she is struggeling to swim to the bottom of the tank. Can anyone tell me what this is?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
wes

Sounds like she has a bit of gas problem if she is having trouble maintaining equilibrium. Maybe a problem with her swim bladder.

" Intestinal blockage / constipation: This is more usually associated with loss of equilibrium, but in some severe cases it can lead to swelling. The only possible treatment is either try to feed the fish a few frozen peas, which act as a laxative, or else try baths in Epsom salts (70g / litre for 5 minutes) which has the same effect. If the condition is advanced, the success rate is likely to be poor"

yeah i think thats what it is after she eats she bloats up and has trouble. how do I take care of this problem? It goes away bout an hour after she eats but in that hour she looks to realy be struggeling.

If it is a blockage of some type try:

"Moving this fish (hard to catch!) to a separate quarantine/treatment tank and administering a level teaspoon per gallon of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) to the water to see if this "moves" the blockage. Additionally, while the animal is there, do feed it Artemia/Brine Shrimp... a laxative type food if ever there was one. Frozen or live. Bob Fenner>"

there is no way for me to get her out of the tank unless i remove all of the rock and last time I did that I ended up with a dead crab and a dead fish. I may try feeding her brine shrimp tonight though.

anyother suggestions?

thanks
