I have a frag of green star polyps about 4 square inches in size that i've had in my 12gal aquapod for nearly 3 months. It was my first frag and has been doing quite well since the day I got it....It has increased in size about 20% and is usually very thick and bushy and vibrant in color. I have it placed mid way up on the live rock in open light.

About a week ago, the polyps started to not open as much...they were taking longer to open (usually they are fully out w/in 30 minutes of the light coming on) and now they pretty much arent coming out at all.

Is this normal behavior. I am experiencing a slight algae bloom...there is algae amongst the polyps. Is this normal? I have had a couple in the past that didnt effect their behavior however.

everything else (shrooms, toadstool leather, xenia, kenya tree) seem to be thriving. I do 20% water changes every 7-10 days.

Params using quick dip test kit are as fallows:
nitrite 0 , nitrate 20, alk 180, ph 7.8-8.4

temp around 80-81, 1.024 sg

thanks in advance!
:)

hmmmm?? thats weird star polyps are usually hardy?? hopefully it will bounce back. is it slimy, maybe a bacterial infection? they have dips you can buy if it looks like it may have some type of weird bacterial infection.

i had some do the same thing a while back , just give them a few days. they are very hardy and will sometimes close for a few days to "rest". in a few days they will start opening up a few at a time then more and more each day and then they will look even better then they did origionaly
they are very tough so dont worry yet. just be patient and keep an eye on your water parameters........good luck..al.

doesnt look like an infection from what i can tell. They just appear closed. I guess I will have to wait and see what happens. I hope you are right al!

I have some GSP too and it stoped opening up. There is also algae on it. May the problem be coming from the algae growing on it?
