Gsp horror

I have an infestation of green star polyps and need some advice on how to get rid of it. Put them in four years ago when just starting reefing (rookie mistake) now they're encroaching on my sps. Any suggestions

This is a tough one. I had a rock that I took out of the tank, scrapped the whole thing off and placed it back in the tank and it came back in a week or so. This coral is very hard to kill. Can you take the rocks out of the tank and scrape them off?

I think the only thing that could work is to let the rock dry outside until everything on it dies. Then give it an acid bath, but that may be too much work.

I would just remove that rock and replace it with a new rock.

is it possible to remove rock for a bit? I had to do something similar with palys. Had to remove rock and scrape/cut off of the rock with pliers.

Peel it back, also GSP doesn't like light and flow as much as SPS so try blasting the area a little more with a power head and maybe increasing your lighting.

wait. do not do this. If polyps get blown lose because of this, they will hide and grow back in no time. I have seen this done before with horrible results.

If a piece of the coral breaks lose, they can hide for months inside the rocks and come back.

Can you just sell the rocks at $10-20 a piece with GSP on it? GSP is quite popular with the ladies (they call it grass).

If they are on the same rock as the SPS then it is too late to take the rock out to kill them off. You could break the rock in two, but if it is too close then manual removal or changing the tank condition to be less favorable to the GSP are the some of the only options. Worst case scenario he could frag the SPS to save as much as possible. I would frag a piece anyways just in case.

If he peels it off and it comes back then at least he bought time for the SPS and he could just peel it back again until the SPS encrusts over the spot it was growing from. If it is too far to encrust over that spot then he should have space to break the rock.

This is actually what I'm dealing with, frustrating[emoji35]

Sorry about the sideways pic

That happens because you are taking the pictures with your phone camera with the top of the phone up. If you turn your phone top to the left side and then take your pictures they will come out the correct way for PC viewing. Same with doing video with your phone, it has to be held horizontal not vertical.

LOL it's called Vertical Video Syndrome VVS :lmao: :D

This made my day. Thank you for sharing and supporting the cause against VVS.

Thanks for the advice about the phone ๏ฟผ

I guess I'll try to get that rock outta there. That whole rock is one DIY piece that's why I didn't want to lose it. ...oh well

I have had GSP colonies for years. Fun stuff. I put it on the walls of the tank. Looks great and always out of the way so I can let it grow without worry.

take a sharp knife and scrape that crap off while siphoning.. the colony will become irritated and close up.. then scrape some more.. it will die at some point if you keep doing that at every water change. If that sounds like too much work, then pop the SPS off and throw the rock in the back yard for a few weeks, then power wash that bad boy and throw it back in.

Yeah I think imma throw it in yard like you said, that's the best option right now. Thanks

Personally I'd sell the rock with the GSP on it. Post it as an auction on ebay and take the highest bidder. You'll be surprised what it will bring.

If you want to keep the rock just remove the SPS and soak the rock for a few days in freshwater, brush it off and put it back in the tank.. Reattach the SPS and no more GSP for you...:hammer:
