GSP - How to keep them alive???

Yes I said keep them alive, for some strange reason I cant keep them alive, have no problem with Mili's, Blastos, Brains, Caps, Mushrooms etc but cannot keep the GSP alive and my husband actually likes GSP - I think he thinks I'm killing it on purpose.

My thought is mag to high? Its at about 1700 right now, cal is 460, ph is 8.2 and dkh is 9. Lights are 175 w MH and 2 T-5 55w atinics on 7 hours and 9 hours respectively.

Wow.

GSP is the type of coral you just cant kill. I am very surprised you are having this problem and all your other corals are fine.

Well i wouldnt go with GSP as they can grow outta control.But the fact they arent doing good could be an indication of water quality.
But could just be there in a low flow area.They do like constant medium flow. In low flow they wont grow much and in high flow will close up. I would try a differant location if you really want them. I would isolate them to a removable frag for easy control.

I have increased the flow and dont think my water quality is bad or my clam and other corals would be showing signs of stress. Here is a few pics I just took of the GSP, clam and my Platy.

Just a shot in the dark,but where do you keep your SG?They seam to kinda "melt" away in my reef if my SG is 1.025-26.

If your talking to me i use a VorTec,& a modded Maxi 1200,& a Mag7 return.

Salinity is 1.025, flow is a Manifold with 7 heads on a Gen-X 70 plus a 600 gph return pump.

Were in the tank over a year - were doing fine and growing like crazy then they just started not coming out and the mat seems to be shrinking down.

gsp is pretty hardy

is there some other coral that could be near it antagonizing it ???

would even hard to believe
but might try moving it around to different places until it starts looking better...

what kind of liting are you using ???

could it be perhaps too high up or getting burned by the lites???


hmmmm just throwing ideas out there to consider
bec dont think have ever heard of this happening as its usually the other way around (how get rid of it!)

No other corals near it and I cant move it as it is on an arch that is about a foot high and a foot and a half long. That half of the tank has a 175w Hamilton 14k and 2 T-5 55w Atinics.

Nothing else has changed except a slight increase in the salinity. From 1.022 to 1.024

if that were the case - if you could catch and breed it - there would probably be a lot of buyers wanting to get this stuff out of their tanks!

i personally like gsp!
but like xenia has to be 'groomed' and prevented from taking over!

how long has the stuff been looking bad?

could there be anything like a new fish or anything else new that might be in some way interacting w/ it ?

new lite bulbs ???

any other new additions to tank... such as using ozone or anything else

actually if you pin it down
then you might be able to share it w/ the other members on RC bec they might want to give it a try themselves!

My father had this same problem with his GSP. I had it in my tank growing out of control and I gave him some liverock with it on it and it died. All of his other corals were doing great. Sorry I can't tell you why but just to let you know there was someone else out there with the same problem.

I have the same problem with GSP. All of my other corals are thriving! Shrooms, xenia, frogspawn, hammer, zoas, palys, everything except the damn GSP..... hmmmm

Your magnesium is pretty high, to be balanced with your calcium and alk it should be at about 1300ppm. I don't know how much this may be affecting your GSP's. If you look at the Finally, an easy way to kill bryopsis thread, they elevate magnesium....however, the one member posted photos that showed once the magnesium Finally, an easy way to kill bryopsis was at 1900ppm for a bit it started to bleach his zoanthids (although after a water change to 1750ppm they started to come back). Perhaps this level is irritating to your GSP's.

So I'm thinking that since the only things I have changed were elevating the salinity and the Magnesium that one or the other is having the affect. The Magnesium did wipe out my some Broyopsis but not all, hair algae, but also got rid of my Red gracilaria. And some of my protopalys are a little lighter so I will do a water change and lower the salinity and the Mag and see if that makes a difference. These are truely the only things that have changed in the tank.

my salinity is around 1.026, and I don't know the Mag level, my test kits don't have a Mag test in them, I will need to buy one I guess.
