GSP Question

My GSP wasn't opening and the top of it was turning brown. I thought it was algea so I attempted to scrape it off with a Q-Tip. While I was observing the piece, I noticed there was a pink sponge growing underneath the GSP mat. I removed the GSP rock from the water so that it will kill the sponge. Could that cause the issue with the polyps not opening. (Parameters in check). Any other suggestions?

I doubt the "red sponge" had anything to do with them not openning. Otherwise they probabably would not have grown over it . But who knows.
I think you did the right thing getting the brown stuff off . I had a mild crash a month ago and my GSP's closed up as tight as a drum .For a while and I too noticed a brown film on them so I took a soft brush to them and a week later they started to open again slowly .
I think sometimes they just close up for a while to clean their purple matting of collected sediment.
Give them some time in a high flow area they will do fine !
How long have you had them and were they ever open?

If it was a sponge it wouldn't have caused any issues except as the sponge grows it could change the shape of the star polyps. Could something irritating the coral like a bristle worm? Has your lighting changed? I would keep extra flow on it and possibly move it lower in the tank if you have changed bulbs or upped your lighting.
