Guide to setup a Quarantine Tank (QT).

kole tang is in qt for past few days. i have tried 3 different types of food but still no eating. any tips on how to get him to feed? maybe it is still to soon, but the fire goby i have in there with him is already eating. my worry meter is only at about a 4 but if he does not eat soon it will def go up. thanks.

soak ur food in garlic extract also try soaking nori in garlic and if ur lfs carries black worms live try them as well. 3 days is a bit early for a new fish in new tank but i think it will settle in and start eating soon.

So I ordered my son a bag sand and they sent the wrong kind. Rather then pay for return shipping they said just keep it. So my question is what would be the down side to putting that bag of live sand in my qt? Thanks

what exactly do u have on hand? is it live sand? r u putting it in an established tank?

EDIT: why would u wanna put sad in QT? qt are run bare.

Carib sea arag-alive figi sand. 20 lbs bag. I guess I figured if I have a free bag of sand, why not use it. I mean I might just run the qt year round. So I thought it would help with bio for the qt. If its not a good idea maybe I will just trade it or something.

its best to run qt bare and not have sand or rock in it. if u were to dose meds and specially treat ich in qt such rocks and sand will make it almost impossible to keep the required strength as rocks and sand will absorb copper out of the meds.

Ok I'm at 1.0085. The fish with ich has eaten well early in the day but didn't eat well tonight. Only ate what I target fed in to his PVC ell. Since I got to hypo the H. claudia which had shown no symptoms has started scratching his gill plates on the PVC. No spots on him and respirations are not rapid. He ate very well just now.

Does the gill infestation get more symptomatic as the parasites die after getting to 1.009?

Also, I didn't ask about nuts and bolts for lowering salinity but I would remove 2-3 gallons of water and add small amounts of R0/DI water back and monitor salinity each time. I ended up using almost 25 gallons of RO/DI water to lower my 29 gallon from 1.026 to 1.0085. Is there a better way than that for next time? I bet my nitrates are zip now (started at 5 before hypo) :-)

I picked up my Kole this past weekend. Seemed to be doing well with Mysis. Was previously out and about, but has now moved into the piece of PVC elbow that I have in there, but I guess otherwise he is doing fine. Got Prazipro started on Sunday, so might be a reaction to that. He is in the QT with an eibli angel who seems to also be doing well.

Scott

PS - My worry meter is always at an 8 with my QT!!

i am glad that ur qt practice is coming along good. fish will act funny for few days and will come around to eat when it gets hungry and gets used to the new setup and salinity.
once u get to 1.009 ich will start to die off and over time it will leave the fish and die off completely.
lowering salinity is done exactly like u mentioned. i always took 2 gal out and replaced with ro/di water thus lowering salinity. i did that 2-3 times per day and drop 0.02 each time. over 3-4 days i drop from 1.026 to 1.009.
Now raising is bit difficult. dropping salinity fast maynot hurt fish that bad but raising is hurtful.
make sure to increase only 0.02 per day at most.

Lots of great info in this thread, I do have one question though. I see where a lot of people talk about doing prazi pro for two weeks. Is prazi pro the same thing as seachem paraguard?

From their website and the information thats listed there it just about the same thing. i have never used it. Not sure how it will work as prazipro will work for a week in a tank. Seachem says dose daily. so i am assuming its not as strong and long lasting as prazipro or formalin ms. those 2 i use all the time and works wonders.

Okay thanks, I'll pick up prazipro online. The lfs here carries seachem but not prazipro so I figured it would be worth asking.

I'm thinking about future additions to my reef as it is starting to come alive.
One of my favorite fishes is a green Manderin.I know theycan be s little tricky to get established though.
I read on a post somewhere here on RC, that Manderins don't need to be quarantined.Due to something in their slime coat.
Is this true? If not, do I follow same qt methods for this type of fish?

sorry for late response i am in Dallas TX (till Sunday) for next few days but will be answering the forum as i get back in everyday.
Mandarin can get ich.
These fish don't generally get Ich as they secrete an oily substance on their bodies. Their skin type and the oils secreted make them extremely sensitive to many medications.

Problem with qt this type of fish is that most of them dont eat any other food except live pods and without any live rock u cant place any pods in the qt tank plus dumping a large quantity of pods and their water in the qt might cause some cycling issues.
i personally never qt mandarin nor medicated them due to reason stated above.

so its been a lil over a week and my kole still has not eaten in my qt. i have tried flake, sheet algae and blood worms. have not seen him any of it. i hope he does, i would think he would eat whats available before he dies but i don't know for sure i guess.

also i got some API copper tests and i am a lil disappointed in them, way to hard to tell the amount of copper. both .25 and .50 look the same. so i am having a hard time telling the amount of copper and also with the ammonia levels, i have to do WC and that takes the reading and measurements out of whack all over again.

im finding having a QT with meds can be alot of work to maintain.

I use cupramine and seachem's Cooper kit. Works the best in a combo. You could try seachems entice additive to the food see if he'll bite
