Gyre 130

Hello All,

My buddy is cycling a 6ft 150 currently and has 2 MP40s on each end. He believes he is not getting enough flow. So he is looking at the Gyre 130 to put on the back wall (vertically). The issue is that he didn't paint the back of the tank, he used some colored cardboard (not very thick). So my question is before he goes out and buys this, will the magnet be strong enough run properly and not fall? Thanks.

The magnet feels pretty strong to me. But strong enough to do through cardboard too is another story. Might be a matter of trying it and returning it if it doesn't work.

how thick is his glass?
MP40 does up to 3/4" glass I believe..

That's true: there is also a booster magnet kit. Gyres being what they are, my inclination would be to fix the Gyre on one end and replace one of the other powerheads or move it. The laminar flow goes in a straight line, hits the wall and folds under. I use one in my wedge-shaped tank (36" wide) and it covers the whole tank at 40%-60%.

If the concern is the magnet working through the glass + cardboard... why not just cut a gap in the cardboard?

You could cut a gap in the cardboard and put black paper in its place an attach the magnet there -- or just attach directly to the tank since the magnet is black after all and the pump will block the spot.

How thick is the cardboard? I think that's the missing info here. The cardboard itself doesn't affect the magnetism, only the extra distance it puts between the two pieces. Is it the corrugated type. or is it flat like the cereal box type? If it's flat, I wouldn't think it would make any noticeable difference.

I have a xf130, the magnet is fairly strong. Also if I have it running at 80% it actually stays in place with no magnet on the outside because of the sheer force it creates push the water forward.


As Sk8 said though I would place it on one of the side panels, you can mount it either horizontally or vertically.

Horizontal will give him a top to bottom roll at the other end of the tank, whereas vertical will give you a circular current going all around the tank.

I was playing around with mine today and prefer the horizontal position.

So, I told my buddy all the good recommendations. He told me that he has kind of a old tank (built in 2011) and it is 18 inches wide, but it has big corner overflows that extend out a lot. so with the overflows in the corner, he only has 8 1/4 inches of space on the side of the tank. So the overflows take up about half of the tank on the side. I believe the Gyre may be too big to put in a horizontal position on the side.
