H. Magnifica

Yeah, they like good flow. I have a Tunze blowing across the top of the tank and it definitely causes their tentacles to wave a good bit.

HELLO ELEGANCE CORAL.Were did you get that rock from the NEM is on? It is lovely as well as that NEM.

Thanks. I have had the rock for many years. It's probably one of the rocks I collected myself almost 20 years ago. Don't remember to tell you the truth. For the past few years it has been in a small pond under low lights. That's probably why you see the sponge growth on it.

can we see pics of the pond? i would love to see it.

Nick

Trust me. You don't want to see the pond. It is just one of those black prefabed ponds you can buy at Lowe's or HD. It is round and just under 4' in diameter. It's not meant to be pretty. It's in my fish room sitting on milk crates with wires. hoses, and pipes running everywhere. Not a pretty sight.

Okay. Yesterday was the one week mark. In the morning he looked very good. He was holding the polyp higher on the column, up off the rock, in true H. Mag form.

By noon he crashed. Went completely limp and started discharging tiny dark brown or black specks, about the size of a grain of sand. You can see them in its mouth.

I'm starting to lean towards chemical warfare as the problem. The carpet isn't looking to good either, and he always looks good. I changed another 25gl of water. I'll see how things go today.

Okay Nick. Here are a couple of top down shots of the pond. The LTA's seem unaffected by what ever is going on in the display tank.

Your nem is simply expelling waste stop stressing that issue.

Now, you need to be feeding it smaller foods. These eat plankton level foods in the wild. So you should feed it a mix of enriched brine shrimp, mini mysis, and PE mysis. About a pinch every other day.

Also, these nems like flow much more than all other species. They are in high current/tidal areas, in the wild heavy wave action washes the discharge away. Mine is parked 5" in front of a pump that is on a wave maker. They like random, wide gentle flow.

Lighting, the stronger the better. Your 175W MH lighting is just fine and you notice the nem is up high. If it was too much, they'd go hide. I have over 7 watts/gal in my tank. T5 with VHO Actinic supplement. The T5 are 6500K and 10K bulb blends.

Success varies with this species. They are very particular about water quality, light, flow, and food. A lot of research is required before buying this type of aquaria. BUT, you already have it so take a look at your setup and adjust accordingly. While they don't need a clown to survive it is HIGHLY recommended. The clown takes care of the nem; feeding it scraps and pulling waste from its mouth. The nem deflates that far because it needs the flow to grab the waste and take it away. Mine rarely deflates because the clown is doing it's house keeping chorse.

BTW, mine was a nearly dead 3-4" sad lump of tissue when it was rescued from a "friend" that was doing his best to kill it. He is now over 6" of super sticky vibrant color. Looks just like yours.

brine shrimp is a pointless anemone food

but PE mysis is perfect, i have heard stories about BAD silversides giving their anemones a sickness.

Healthy large mags can swallow a tiger shrimp with no problem. Small pieces of shrimp is better, regular size PE is good. IMHO, they do not need anything but that.

I would not use silversides or clams. What GSMguy says is true, people have experienced problems with these two items.

I will agree "regular" brine shrimp are pointless, but enriched are not. They have a lot of the vitamins the ritteri needs. My new personal favorite is pacifica krill as they are the same size of PE mysis or just a tad bigger. I find the full size krill too big for my anemones size. I've seen a friends that was nearly 18" across and he fed regular sized krill, still never fed silversides though.

i just got my magnifica today! i couldn't resist because it looked really healthy and had amazing color at the lfs. mine is doing great and has expanded but for some reason it will not attach completely. how long did it take for yours to attach? and are there any other tips on keeping them? thanks for any info!

what tank is it in, what lights do you have for it?

I wonder if it were silversides that eventually caused the demise of most of my magnifica?
They were fed mostly silverside, with an ocassional small shrimp or mysis thrown in.

yeah i have the snowflakes in the same tank but they showed little interest in it. even if they don't host the nem i wouldn't care because the nem is beautiful! i can't take pics now but i will try later. any tips to get it to attach?

oh no, they will host.

lower the flow and make a smooth flat platform under the light.

yeah i already did that. i have a huge bowl shaped rock that is directly under the light that i placed it in. i think it may have attahced part of it's foot but i don't think it's fully attached yet. they like a lot of flow right? how do you know they will host? and will they find it by themselves?
