i just got my magnifica today! i couldn't resist because it looked really healthy and had amazing color at the lfs. mine is doing great and has expanded but for some reason it will not attach completely. how long did it take for yours to attach? and are there any other tips on keeping them? thanks for any info!

I placed mine on a rock in the pond where there is very little flow. He attached right away. Then I moved him, rock, and all into the display. He hasn't moved yet.

On the side of the tank that holds my H. Mag. there is 11.81 W/gl of light. (I don't put any stock in the whole watts per gallon thing though) He doesn't seem to like the MH running more than just a few hours.

great thanks for the info!!! do you have anything hosting yours? and if so do you think it is happier with them hosting or not hosting?

yay! thats good news for sure.

your magnifica should benefit from hosting and the clowns will be much happier hosting a mag than a duncan.

Here's what's interesting, this anemone looks near to identical to the one in that other thread that was determined to be a BTA, exact same colored foot, and tentacles same shape and color...

This anemone was, and is probably one of the healthiest mags that I have ever seen at an LFS. And for $150 I would have bought it except I had spent $65 on a potters wrasse that died about 2 hrs after being in my tank...with PERFECT parameters...thank goodness its not the same store...but that anemone would have been mine!;)

can you go take pictures of it for me?

It's good to hear your snowflakes are hosting, as others have said, my experience is that clownfish are generally good for anemones. I have two ocellaris in with my H. magnificas and they bounce between them. Obviously there are instances where clownfish can be too large for an anemone and be very detrimental to it, but assuming the clowns are 1/3 or smaller than the diameter of the anemone (in inches), then I think they are a good thing.

ok great! they don't host as much during the day. the will host for a few minutes and then swim around the tank for a while. but at night they sleep in the nem. they are a lot smaller than the nem also. it still looks great so far so i hope it stays that way!

GSMguy, i don't have pics yet but i am positive it's a magnifica.

my experiences

my experiences

i have been lucky with my manificas so far. one is going to be 10 years soon while the other one is going to be 7-8 years. from my experience, they love high light and a lot of current. i have learned that when you get one in a tank, they will attach to a rock and will stay there when there is direct current blowing on them.

as for feeding, i only feed them once every three weeks but they seem to be thriving. i found that if i feed them more often, they will usually not take the food.

i guess i have been lucky with them. wish i can keep a carpet in the tank too but i do not want to push my luck.

This is a photo from today. The anemone is bigger today than it has been since I've had it. I can't say if this relationship is having an impact on the anemone or not. I like to keep clown fish out of my anemones until they have had a chance to settle in and I know they are going to make it. I had hoped this clown would stay in the carpet where she belongs. There is no way to know how a clown fish is going to react to an anemone. Sometimes they are well behaved and sometimes they are not. I had a female GSM carry a BTA around the tank in her mouth until she killed it. I've had them steal food or just be violent towards the anemone. So far my Clarkii has been watching her manners. If she misbehaves, she's out of there.

Anemone looks great. I think the clown will have a beneficial effect. Pic looks like a scene from nature. Keep up the good work.

Thanks y'all. You have been a great help. I bought fresh food yesterday and will see how feeding goes today. So far the clown and anemone seem to be getting allong great.

For magnificas I have noticed that they do better with shellfish than with fish. With new ones I prefer to feed them fresh no water added scallop and when they are settled in and growing, I use small raw shrimp with a bit of the softer part of the shell on. I would not recommend using silversides for magnificas and if there is any question to their health, hold off on feeding them. I think more damage is done with food breeding the bacteria or whatever they are fighting off than there is benefit from the nutrition. Better to let them heal up on their own reserves and the sugar from the light.

yay!!!! my mag is still doing great! it's been 4 days since i got it and it ate for the first time! i fed it a small piece of scallop! lol i am getting way to excited.

LOL  At least you didn't start a whole thread about it, or take 1000 pics, or get up in the middle of the night and check on it, or tell everybody you know that you got it. I think I may have a problem.:D

Congrats on getting it to eat. Do you have any pics?

Just curious, why do you leave part of the soft exoskeleton on the shrimp?
