haddoni help

I bought a great looking blue haddoni from my LFS the other day and have a question.

The mouth was slightly open when I picked it up. I wasnt terribly concerned about it as the colour was great, and the tenticles where VERY sticky and it had only been in the tank for 2 days.

It is now in my tank and has been since saterday night. The mouth is open about the size of a nickle.

To give you an idea, the anemone is about 16" across and Im sure it could expand more.

The colour hasnt faded at all and the tenticles are still very sticky, infact he tried to grab one of my cleaner shrimps last night.

I am just wondering how big an issue the mouth is and what I can do to try and get it closed.

I know everyone will be asking for tank specs so here they are.

120 gallon display with about 150 lbs of rock and 3" sand bed
40 gallon sump with 50lbs of rock and large ball of cheato
skimmer rated for 250 gallons
reactors with carbon and rowaphose
48" aquamedic light, 2-250w mh and 2 48" t5HO

nitrates->5
phosphate-unmeasurable if any
sg-1.024

Thanks in advance.

Are you acclimating it to your lights? I like to use 3 layers of window screening b/t the tank and the lights, with removing a layer every 5-7 days.

I would do a 20% water change, and run some fresh carbon -- in the past that has seemed to help with my new ones -- to the point were the mouth would close up shortly after. Also, would get your SG to 1.026.

I dont have window screen on right now because the rest of my tank is still getting used to the MH lights so they are only on for 3 hours a day right now. I would be adding an hour on friday.

I will do a water change tonight and bring it up to 1.025 and several small water changes over the rest of the week to get it up to 1.026.

IMO/E, using window screening works the best -- and cutting back the photo-period has little effect. Think about it this way, for the first day of summer, you can still get sun-burnt in an hour, but if you have sunscreen on, you won't.

Sorry for the tedious question, but what kind of window screening? When I was at home depot they had anywhere from 60% light reduction to over 90%.

Can you post a picture?
It might not be that bad and you're just overly concerned.
I would raise the SG to 1.026-1.027 level also.

Run carbon, do more frequent, small water changes, acclimate to lighting. If it is still colored and attached, it is most likely just stressing from the move.

I am gonna give a +1 on the screening. I had a green Haddoni that was bleached and I recovered it using good care and the screening. When I thought it was better I pulled the screening off. Apparently it was too early because it started gaping and on the 3rd day it started wandering. I put the screen back over it and by the next morning all was well. After another week I removed a layer and continued weekly until it was gone and the carpet was fine.

Ive had my blue haddoni for about a month now (about 16 -20 inches). I originally questioned the gurus on here because mine too had a gaping mouth. Mine originally was alot more open then the size of a nickel however. They suggested the fresh carbon and every other day water changes which I did. Since then the mouth is still open a nickel size daily, however, coloring is fantastic, foot is attached, and it is sticky and eats very well. Not sure if some carpets just have a slightly open mouth all the time. Im just continuing to monitor mine as if its still an issue and stay on top of parameters. But, the point is, I wouldn't be overly stressed. Continue to watch it for changes, movements, coloring, and know that you now house a very delicate specimen that will require more attention. GL :fun2:

here are the pics.

The mouth looks like its open more then it really is because of the colour of the rim of the mouth. It is probably approaching the size of a quarter in the pic.

The first pic gives you an idea how big it is. That yellow tang is just under 4" long. and much closer to the camera.

This is the best pic I could get of the mouth.

Thoughts?

well I havent fed it anything except what it catches out of the water column when I feed the fish. I was going to hold off feeding it until the weekend so it had a week to settle in.

So if he is hungry he will have to wait.

Don't feed newly acquired anemone that's still trying to acclimate to the tank. I would wait at least a month to feed it. Even still, feeding is overrated and it's something that's people obsessed with because they think the nem will do better. Feeding will only get you into trouble IMO. The nem will do fine providing good light, flow, and water parameters.
Can you see the foot attached to the glass when you look under the tank? If so, you really have nothing to worry. A healthy and strong haddoni will dig it's foot and attached to the glass under the sand.

It's a beautiful color haddoni.

I cant see the foot attached to the glass as I have foam under my tank, however there is a large pile of sand around the column so and it hasnt moved at all so I assume its attatched.

Sorry. I wasn't advising you to feed it. What I mean is, whenever I feed my tank, it will do that if I haven't fed it recently.

ohh ok. Well I will be feeding mysis again tonight so it might get a bit to eat.

There seems to be little change in the mouth right now but we will see.

well it has been a little over a week and he is still looking good. The mouth is closing a bit more every day. It is fully closed after the lights go off but when the lights come back on and he expands more the mouth opens a bit.

I have an anemone crab that has been in the tank for several months and doing well. When I brought home the carpet there was an anemone crab that we didnt see inside one of the folds. Well the 2 crabs had been sharing the carpet for the first week but I guess one decided it didnt want to share. Not sure which is which but I came home on friday to find one of the crabs missing a claw and 3 legs. Needless to say, he is no longer in the center of the anemone, more under the edge away from the other crab.
