haddoni nem with off center mouth

Hello,

I am loking at getting a nice blue haddoni from someone getting out of the hobby and have a question. The picture he has of it shows the mouth very off center. Could this be an issue? Could it just be from something irritating it on that side and it not fully expanding because of it?

It is a good size nem so it would be perfect for my clowns but it looks bizzare with a mouth that far off center.

Any way you could post that picture? Wouldn't want to make a judgment on that without seeing what it looks like.

Either something is stinging the heck out of it, or it was damaged and lost part of the oral disc -- I would ask.

If you have every kept S. Haddonis before I would try it --- as long as the price isn't too high, since something happened to it. However, if you have never kept one before I would pass -- something is off about this one, nothing too major but should be attempted if this is your first one.

He did mention that it has a BTA close to it. Would it really expand enough if happy to fill in fully?

I was also wondering if maybe something damaged it on that edge.

It would be my first haddoni so I might pass.

Many years ago I did have an BTA (( E. Quadricolor )) sting the heck out of a Haddoni.

If that is the case I wouldn't be as worried.

What size tank do you have?
What lights?
Parameters -- with numbers
Livestock?

I have a

custom 100 gallon, 40"x24"x24", with 40B sump, vertex IN-280 skimmer

lights:
36"x6 bulb HO T5 Tek light

Parameters:
salinity:1.026
ammonia:0
nitrite:0
nitrate: <5

Livestock
pair of GSM clowns
3" blue lined rabbit fish
3" blue throat trigger
4" BTA

Plus clean up crew.

The specs look good -- what do you have for flow ? (( Haddonis aren't found of lots of flow. ))

The only thing that would make me stop would be the existing BTA -- I have tried mixing S. Haddonis and E. Quadricolors in the past, beside what can happen with they touch, my Haddoni would not stay put until I sold off all of the BTAs.

for flow I have 2 Koralia 1400 and the return pump of 1500gph minus 4' head.

I have had the BTA for about a month and the clowns are showing no interest so someone had suggested trying a haddoni. The BTA wouldnt sting the haddoni as it is about 15" off the bottom and on the opposite side of the tank as where the haddoni would be.

I am running carbon would that help at all?

I remember reading somwhere(can't remember where exactly) that keeping carpet and other species of anemonies in the same tank seems to cause the carpets unrest/stress as they can "sense" the other anemone in the tank. I think it had something to do with chemical secretions by the other 'nems.

The problem is that BTAs will split, and you can't count on the clones to stay put.

IMO, carbon will help a bit, but not enough -- I have never had good luck mixing other species of anemones with Haddonis.

Yes it is, I just have no experience with haddonis and wanted to run it past some experienced keepers. My main concern is iwill it recover or will is remain like that?
So have you seen it fully expanded?

It is possible for the anemone to recover. That is if the two anemones have been separated an the damage hasn't gotten worse. It will probably be a slow healing process that takes several months. Other than the obvious damage, the anemone looks pretty good. If the price is right, and the anemone doesn't have to be shipped, I would say it has a good chance of recovery.

what would be considered a good price?

Whatever price that you feel comfortable with, but...

I no longer have mine, but when I brought it from the Diver Den section of LA about 4 years ago it was $300,

Just remember. $300 was for the anemone Todd posted. Not for an anemone that's been beat half to death. Personally, I wouldn't pay full retail price, or anything close to that, for this anemone. In the end though, it all boils down to what the anemone is worth to you. We all pay some crazy prices for that critter we just have to have.
