Haddoni spawning.... again.

Well, again to my surprise my green haddoni has just spawned. I'd started a thread - http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=480016 - the last time and wasn't expecting it to occur again this quickly. Anyway, around 7 o'clock this evening I'd attempted to feed both the green and a new red haddoni (which I'd acquired only last Saturday) but although both anemones initially accepted the food they made no attempt to eat. Instead they both released the pieces of squid. Then the green started the now familiar routine of alternate vase shape then flat topped mushroom shape. Within approx half an hour the green released a cloud of eggs. Then the red also started the vase then flat topped mushroom posturing and ALSO released eggs ! I managed to get my camera in time to run off a few pictures and also a couple of short videos of both anemones releasing. The battery then went flat before I could upload. It's now on charge so I don't really know what they are going to turn out like. Fortunately I managed to stop the lights from completely going off so hopefully the pictures will be somewhat better than before.

Now you just need to find a male :) I'll bet there'd be a market for fertilized haddoni eggs, for people who know what they're doing. Easy to ship them, too.

There is a third haddoni in the tank but it didn't join in. I was hoping that between the three, one would be male. Maybe next time (?) Recently (past month or so) I've been feeding them every other day with the exception of the red. This came from another anemone keepers tank via a LFS so I couldn't say with any certainty how often that had been fed prior to my purchase the previous weekend. The LFS did say however that it had been brought in because it kept eating the fish in its former residence so I would guess that it was well fed, intentionally or otherwise. The long term plan for the anemones and their tank is to slowly convert it from its current mixed reef ie some SPS, LPS and of course the carpets, to a more lagoonal type with more open sand and a deeper sand bed. There is also a purple based magnifica in there along with a spawning pair of nigripes. These will be moved on to make space once a suitable owner can be found.

My female haddoni spawned a few months back. It spawned after about a six month period of feeding almost every day. I believe it is the feeding that provides them with the added nutrition needed to spawn. You feed much more than the average hobbyists. IMHO, this is why your anemones are spawning, and many others don't. Just my opinion though.

Yes, and it was your observation on that thread which prompted me to increase the feeding schedule. I've had the green for about three years and it was approx 4" in diameter when I first obtained it. At the moment, depending upon its mood - for want of a better term- it's approx. 12-14" in diameter. The first spawning was on july the 9th and on that day I had changed the flow in the tank slightly and also had completed a 120 litre water change so there were a couple of variables in there. This last spawning, there had been no water change that day and the water flow was just the same. It may of course be seasonal (?)and there is also the possibility that it has reached sexual maturity and/or a suitable size but I do feel that the major influence is the feeding schedule. The red is about the same size and I've only had it a few days so I don't think that I'm doing anything in particular ie water quality etc that has influenced the red. Of course, suitable conditions are a prerequisite but I am convinced, as you are, that regular (heavy ?) feeding has triggered this. Finally, the third haddoni, a beautiful bicolour green, has only been in my posession for a couple of weeks and is a maximum of around 7-8" in diameter. so it MAY be too small/immature or not had sufficient feeding as yet.
