Haffs09 370gal Tank Build...Finally!

Glad to see you back in business with fish in the tank.

That sure isnt your typical fish list for a reef tank. I see you have a passion for angels. I had rehomed my 5.5" emp(changing). He just kept going after my personifers.

I added a 2nd achilles. The aggression seems to be fading some after the 2nd day.

Dustin - I look forward to seeing your test results. Somehow I unsubsribed to your thread...time to fix that!

geaux - Yes, I do love angels. The goldflake and emperor will eat out of my hand. I am concerned about the emperor, since it hasn't put on weight like the others. I first thought it was due to having the fowler's tang with it in the 75gal tank and it couldn't keep pace with it when it came to feeding time. Over time, it has become bloated around the mid section as if it ate a gum ball, but still thin around its lateral line area. Maybe it has something internal going on? It's poop is stringy and not normal too. I may start soaking my frozen food in Seachem's metronidazone. If that doesn't improve the situation over the course of a month, I'll pull it and treat it with something. On the positive side, it is a very active fish with a great appetite.

When it comes time to stocking corals, it will be trial and error with the angel mix I have. We'll see how it goes.

You're brave with adding a 2nd achilles. I was tempted a couple times to get 2 or 3 more, but couldn't convince myself that it would work over the long haul. So instead, I made an impulse buy of three purple tangs. I may not be in a better position than with multiple achilles, but I have seen more tanks with multiple yellow or purple tangs than with achilles tangs. Who knows, only time will tell.

I just ended up dividing my tank into two with egg crate today. The two had been going at it three days straight and the larger looked almost deathly ill this morning. I had the new, smaller achilles in an acclimation box for a week, but that didnt help.

Now I really doubt the two achilles combo will work. The Achilles+PBT combo I have no problems though. They get along shockingly well. My big achilles has the worst case of lymph i've ever seen. Definitely not ich since no other fish has any white spots, and the spots on the achilles are huge cauliflower like.

I might have a 2nd larger tank in my future. Dont know quite yet if I want to make the commitment.

I'll shoot you a PM with a couple of video links.

btw, what all does your emp juvie eats? how often do you feed?

Did the lympho develop after the 2nd achilles was added?

You have some nice, fat, fish in those videos!

The emperor will only eat frozen food (scallops, clams, homemade mix, angel formula, mysis, and rod's foods). I typically feed the tank 3x's a day, 2x with frozen and once with NLS pellets or a flake food. All the other fish, save the flame angel are getting nice and thick.

The lymph has been on the #1 achilles for probably a good 3 weeks. I've had lymph that came with an angel before. It lasted easily 2+ months until I gave up and added it to my DT. Maybe a few weeks after, it cleared up.

I can easily see with my two personifers, the false personifer is much much fatter since it eats dry food+frozens. so it gets 2-3 extra dry(heavy pellets, some flakes) food meals a day on top of frozens. the true personifer only eats frozens, so typically PE mysis 2x/day.

I think with time, your emp will fatten up.

my LFS sells PE mysis 40oz for $40.

I have seen on manhattenreefs.com where they get PE mysis from a distributer in Jersey(i think) for real cheap. It comes in huge big blocks, maybe 5lb sizes.

the PBT eats mostly pellets and some flakes/nori.

I cant wait to see all your fish debut in the DT. There will be a lot of activity with all the fish.

Thanks for keeping me honest guys! Yes, I'm long overdue for an update. Having son #2 join the family the day after Thanksgiving has limited my ability to work on the tank. I'll try to spend a little time this weekend cleaning it up a bit and posting some pictures.

mseepman - no corals yet. I did get two gen2 radions in early December, but haven't installed them. Since I don't have air circulating through the canopy, I don't want to put them in a high humidity environment and risk damaging something. I put the cart before the horse with that purchase!

Glad to hear nothing bad:) I've had the same, still working on my build when I have the spare time and a kid coming in April has haulted my project at times.

Those darned kids! I know what you mean...I have a 2yr old and a 5 yr old and guess what...they never stop interrupting your tank time. So the moral of the story is...in about 16yrs when my youngest goes to college (fingers crossed) I'll have time to finish my tank. :)

Yes, there's never enough time to work on the tank with little ones running around!

Welcome aboard proteinskimmer! Hopefully over the next couple of months, things will settle down around here and I can make some time for a visit. We'll see how it goes :)

Update time

After trying for 3 weeks to get decent shots of the tank, I gave up and tried my hand at a short video. Not the greatest, but at least you can see who calls my tank home.

75gal future 'fuge:

Yellow Tang
Purple Tang x2

I found out that zebrasoma sp. tangs do not fair well in Cu treatment. With my initial treatment for ich last year around this time, the desjardini developed HLLE. I was extremely frustrated with my situation and dosed cupramine between 0.5ppm and 0.6ppm. I know that was too high and the desjardini suffered because of it. Fortunately, he is slowly healing.

Last April/May, I made an impulse buy and acquired 3 purple tangs and a yellow tang. All fish were doing great and I decided to do a preventative cupramine treatment on them. Over the course of 4 days, I raised the Cu level to a target of 0.4ppm. I maintained that for about 3.5 weeks. I wanted to go 4 weeks, but the purple tangs stopped eating just past the 3 week mark. Over the next couple months, I watched the purple tangs severely deteriorate. They developed severe HLLE and their fins receded. I lost one during that time. Honestly, I didn't think any of them were going to survive. My potter's angel and black onyx clown were in the same QT as the purples and they did fine throughout the treatment.

The yellow tang was in a divided 20H QT tank with the powder blue. The powder blue did well throughout the treatment, but the yellow tang stopped eating towards the end of treatment. He slowly became emaciated and I thought he too was a goner. Fortunately, he slowly rebounded and I moved him into the 75 gallon last November.

In an effort to reduce the number of tanks running in my basement, I decided to combine the purple tangs with the yellow tang. I thought all hell was going to break loose with the move but was willing to roll the dice. While in the 55gal QT, the purples were divided with eggcrate. Daily, they would try to nip and slash each other through the eggcrate. After rearranging a bunch of rocks in the 75, I added the purples. There may have been some initial skirmishes, but to my surprise, all three tangs get along with each other. The yellow tang is about twice the size of the purples, so that helps him assert his dominance if need be. Both purples are eating well, but are quite deformed from the Cu experience. The HLLE is present, but isn't getting any worse an may actually be healing. Their dorsal and tail fins are pretty much gone, but they seem happy swimming around in their larger home. In a few months, I may add all three to the display tank if I think they can hold their own.

The next main activity for the tank will be getting air circulating through the DT canopy. I'm thinking about a Fantech HRV, but need to do some more investigative work. Not only do I want the air circulation through the DT, but I want to have a supply and exhaust drop in my basement. My basement is only ~625sqft, so I'll need to size a unit with that in mind as well. I'm probably a couple of months away from making that happen. Once that's done, it will be time to get some lights into the canopy!

WOW! Thank you for share all of your hard work with us. It's very inspiring! I have a 130 gallon tank right now but, my dream tank is 345 gallon. I didn't realize all the planning that goes into it if you want it done right.

Papa_jerry - yes, planning goes a long way to lessen the chances of an "oops." Plus, other than your time, it doesn't have to cost anything.

As I think about my system, here are two things that I didn't consider during the build:

1. I designed my canopy to cover the edge of eurobracing, but should have extended it down an inch to conceal the water line. There nothing like having your 90+ year old grandfather sit down to see the tank for the first time and the first thing he says is, "What's all that light coming from the top of the tank?"

2. The bulkheads through the eurobracing, when fully equipped with return nozzles and such, don't allow my Might Magnet F4 to pass by. So in those regions, I had to manually clean the interior of the tank. Not a big deal, but a little PITA. Fortunately, I shutoff the returns that went to the front of my display and removed them. I positioned my MP60s towards the front third of the tank and have plenty of flow.

Pushwood - Thanks. It is gorgeous and I can't wait to see how it looks under good lighting. I'm considering whether or not to try and acquire another small one to see if I can get them to live happily together.

rjpaws74 - Yes, the fowler's is another gorgeous fish. It has so many different color morphs depending on its mood. Someone posted on RC that they really don't get their full coloration until they reach 9" or so. Mine is 6-7" long and if that's the case, I can't wait to see how it will look then!

Whats the dimension of the external overflow? Also how wide is the eurobrace? I whant a peninsula tank they look so good!

h.cordero - the external dimensions of the overflow are (LxWxH) 21" x 6" x 12". The overflow pane of glass has a cutout along the top that is 20"L x 1.5"H. The eurobrace is 4.5" wide and out of 5/8" thick glass.

I'm glad you like the tank!

I'm long overdue for an update. Hopefully I can post a video or a few pics in the next few weeks.
