hey everyone, I just got a couple zoo frags thats mounted on shells. the problem is that it also came with some red hair algae, some stuck deep between polyps. now I don't have any hair algae peoblem in my tank and don't want to start, so how can I get rid of the little patches of hair algae on the shells. I alrady tried to pull them out manually, but I can never get it all out becasue some are really stuck to the shell. The good thing is that since its only on shells, I can take them out and do what ever is needed w/o having to do it to the tank.

What do you guys suggest I should do to get rid of this little proble before it spreads to the whole tank? keep in mind I can remove the shells with the red hair algae on it.

Thanks

Hey samwoo2go,

Off-hand I can't think of anything that would kill the algae but not harm the coral or its endosymbiotic algae. I'm sure there are permanent-bonding enzyme inhibitors that only effect algae (probably lots that only affect red algae for that matter) but it beats me what they would be and how / where you could get such a thing. I'll ask around and let you know if I find anything out.

Well Im looking for a way to eliminate the small patch permanently so I wouldn't have to keep worrying about them.

Plus, im not a big fan of crabs, you never know what they'll do when they feel like it.

I don't know if this is my cause or not, but since I added a sailfin tang I have been noticing a huge decrease in algae. Aside from that, my dkh was a little low. I have since brought that up so not sure if it is one or the other that has done the trick.
