Hair Algae Solution That Worked For Me

Another person in Columbus is about to use this or quit the hobby for a while.

Where did you guys in Columbus get your treatment from?

ok thanks. The reason I ask is because its the trapped nutrients in live rock that causes the HA. Algaefix will be a quick fix but maybe not a long term cure. Your water column might be totally free of phoshates/nitrates and other nutirents but the rock holds it - esp phoshate - and uses it to promote the growth of HA. At least that is the conclusion I have reached, after 6 months of battle and trying every method and idea out there....using a chemical goes against all better judgement but I really have nothing to loose at this point. I am doing a dark period which ends tonight, after the lights have been on for about an hour I will take a pic of my tank for a before shot and post it. Then its a water changes and then my first dose.

Do you ever baste your rocks RH513? (somehow that sounds wrong!)
I have some mild success at slowing the stuff down by repeated basting on a steady basis (every other day). I think this means I must be putting too much food into the tank, but it hardly seems like I'm feeding anything at this point. I will be cutting down once more once I start this treatment.
We'll see.

I baste regularly. I have never had fish in the tank only shrimp, hermit and snails. I went through a period last summer where I was over feeding the shrimp frozen mysis and doing too small of water changes but I don't think that added that much phoshate - it helped though. I use 0ppm TDS ro water. And at this point I am not feeding that tank at all...the shrimp might go in my QT tanks soon. I also have concluded that HA has to be seeded/introduced to a tank to start growing in the first place. All my HA problems started when I purchased a GSP frag with some HA on it. I didn't think the HA was a problem but then it just took off and was out of control before I could act. Conditions in the tank might have been right for the HA to grow when I introduced it but I had zero nuisance algae before that. I also think that maybe HA just needs to run its course and I thought I had resigned myself to letting that happend but now the HA is starting to overcome some of my favorite corals and I pretty much HATE my tank so its algaefix or bust...

umm thanks for letting me rant - this HA is so disappointing and frustrating.

I feel your pain, brother :)
I went through the same thought process. I had a little here and there, it kept to itself and one day, pow, green forest covering most everything. Gotten it down quite a bit using all of the tried and true methods but am sick and tired of harvesting cups of the stuff every week.

Next step will be starting up one of those new algae based energy farms if this product doesn't work.

I have a 90 with gha. I beat it about a year ago by cooking my rock but it has come back slowly, plus I got lazy a few months back on water changes. In December I got back on track and in January I had to move my tank to my new house. My water peramitors are right on but I am getting GHA again. I started using Algeafix yesterday and I going to raise my MG to 1600 with kent marine after reading a few other threads.

I did notice that my orange ricordia was not happy with the Algeafix, but everything else was fine. Has anyone else noticed this with ricordias.

My rics are fine. I keep Florida's and Yuma's and no stress from what I've noticed.

The HA is gone in my 90 and hasn't come back. The forest which is my 20, it looks like maybe half of it's gone? Kinda hard to tell - there was a lot in there.

I've done six doses so far and I think that if you have a severe infestation, it would serve you best to scrub as much of it first before dosing - you will probably get better results. If you have minimal HA, then you'll probably beat the stuff out in just a few doses.

Mine is not to bad, just on a few rocks here and there. I pulled of what I could. My ric's look good today, but when I put the Algeafix in, it was the only thing that had a reaction.

Ok well I suck at posting and this is the third try. I had a long text of info but I am not re-typing it. Just ask me questions

So this is the before shots. Taken after the lights were off for three days...

and this picture was taken yesterday

sorry for the poor quality of the pictures i have to take them with my phone until my new camera arrives. there is a significant decrease in the amount of algae and the algae covering the sand and glass is completely gone. there are still a few patches of hair algae on my rocks but is thinning out

The last of my hair algae still seems to be holding tight. I am going to do another water change and scrub more rock off this weekend. It looks the same as when I last posted a pic.

I am in Columbus OH and ordered it through Dr. Fosters & Smith. I actually ordered two bottles, and feel one should be plenty. If anyone wants to purchase one off me let me know.

A quick update. Day one after the first dose. My hammer is stressed and mostly closed BUT that could be from the dark period and the water change - I move the K1 a little different. That hammer has always closed up with too much flow. Second, my skimmer had a red liquid in it along with the tea color and usual nasty foam. Not sure what the red liquid was, never saw that before. It could be the phosban breaking down a bit?? As for coral stress, that's going to be ok for me. As long as nothing is dying I will keep dosing. If this doesn't work someone in Columbus will be the new proud owner of some new corals and the live rock will me a nice landscape this summer.

ok i try it.? and it is working some of the gha is starting to go a way after two teratemenets so far so good

I have administered three doses and it is definitely working. The algae is diminishing quickly and I am able to siphon it off in clumps. I have not noticed any ill effects to the aquarium inhabitants.

The fourth dose went in this morning and the algae is almost gone. I am very pleased with the results thus far.

Any updates R?
I will be starting treatment this weekend, if the product arrives as planned.

I did my forth dose this morning. I am seeing a small change so far. It looks like the HA is thinner than before. I will post updated pics this evening.
