Hair Algae Solution That Worked For Me

Like I said. I noticed some positive effects.... but certainly nothing like has been posted here. I've had no algae start floating around the tank or was my algae even easier to pull off. Still feels like pulling grass out of the lawn.

I just noticed a sudden stun in growth and some color change.

Does it help? Yes. Is it the miracle cure. No way.

FishHick...............

Good so far for you..................by now you know not all have been so lucky..........so continued good luck.

If I meant suggest something on you rock(s) structure ( this looks just like mine when first setup) setup. After you get the algea under control.......what I would do is rearrange all your rock so that maximum substate is visible, by doing that when you gravel clean ( siphon ) the sand you will not believe the amount of gunk under the rocks..........and also you now have found the main sourse of nutrients for your algae...IMO

Thanks for the suggestion saltydog64. But I dont have any substrate in there right now... I was waiting until the algae was cleaned up so I didnt suck up substrate when sucking the algae out. Do you think it would help to add substrate?

I have been sucking out around the rock. Next water change (tomorrow if I can get away from studying for a while) I will move the rock around and get under them.... I think I will dose once more, then wait three days and then take the rocks out and scrub off whats left on them.

Im really impressed with how this is working. Im really hoping once the algae is gone I dont have to keep redosing! The whole cancer thing kinda scares me, since I am not coordinated enough to stay dry when messing with the tank. But it only causes cancer in CA, and Im in OH so Im safe right? just kidding!

Many items are marked with that saying for some reason. My solder at work is labeled with that as well. My employer tells us to "shut the *%#$ up. We're in Florida, so we're safe". LOL

Hey All,

I have been using Algaefix for about 6 doses total in my 25g nano, and it has completely destroyed all hair algae. However, I checked my nitrates last nite & they are about 25. Maybe from the die off? I did a 25% water change & wil repeat again tonite. Should I continu to dose weekly, or wait till nitrates are down, & I see some hair growth?

well just an update, i have done my 5th dose yesterday and all aglae on the back glass is gone, as well as all algae on the sand. the hair algae remaining on my rocks is becoming thinner and starting to dissolve away. no effect on livestock yet. i am doing a 3 day dark period ATM but will post pics when i turn the lights back on.

I have officially stopped dosing. No change in the HA and my corals are starting to show signs of stress: little PE, birdsnests are dark and lost the green and pink and a couple montis are turning pale. Note that I have been dosing for 6 weeks. I am going to do a 40 gal water change tomorrow to get some of this out my system.

No. I never got to that point. At this point, I'm not real comfortable with how stressed my corals are. I have not dosed vodka for a week. I was going to do a large water change and then try the Algaefix again but with the condition of my corals I don't want to risk it. Not sure what I am going to do now. I have just been trying to manually remove the HA. I'm not doubting that it would work without vodka in the system, I'm just worried about the corals and prolonged exposure to this.

I meant to update my progress as well. The Algaefix completely rid my 180 of hair algae. It ended up dosing about 7 doses (maybe 8?) before stopping. I had no signs of stress from my fish or corals. The only side effect I appear to be having is a bit of a cyano outbreak. I am doing small blackouts to rid the tank of it. I am scheduled for another water change and I will blow whatever is in there off the rocks and suck it out. When I was doisng....I would cut my skimmer and carbon/GFO reactor off for the first 24 hours. I never dosed anything else such as vodka with the algaefix. I will post pics tomorrow of the tank with some of the cyano.

I am also not seeing much help. I stopped dosing the zeostart and noticed that HA actually get worse, from when it was better. I have restarted Zeostart, and tweaked my skimmer. The fish and corals seem fine for now, so I will keep at it for a few more weeks.

Oh yeah, one more thing. As soon as I stopped dosing the ZeoStart, I started to see Cyano, which i had not had in my tank for quite some time.

The last of the algae seemed to be hanging on tight, so I took 1/2 the rocks out so far and scrubbed them yesterday. Unfortunately it took longer than I thought so I didnt have time to get them all done. But they are looking much better. The ones I did I tried to put back so there wasnt so much space for things to become trapped underneath. I am planning on getting some eggcrate soon to elevate the whole rockscape. I also added another dose yesterday of the Algae fix.

I would like to as substrate when the algae looks to be under control. A friend thought this might cause another mini cycle and another algae out break. Can anyone tell me if that probably will happen?

Thanks!

Hick..........

Much, much better and your on the right track for sure....did you mean to say add substrate to your tank??? if so i wouldn't think this would cause a " recycling of the tank...why???

Your idea of elevating the LR is an excellant one leave as much "substrate" as possible open to "cleaning"....

Good luck on this...

After seeing some of the results from those using this product, I believe I will be trying it next week. I have had no success at ridding the HA from my small tank. We'll see what this stuff does.
Photos to follow along.

I am in too, will be starting the algaefix Wed after a water change. I have what I now consider a server case of it, you'll see with the pics. I have tried all the conventional ways to rid it and I think it only made things worse. This is it for me - algaefix or bust - if I can't rid the HA I am getting rid of the tank. So stay tuned for a cure or a really good deal on a 24g nanocube.

My question is wether or not anyone has noticed if the algaefix works better if they dose with the lights on or off. Just curious wether it gets absorbed better with them on or off.
