Hair algae: Will any fish eat this stuff?

Ok Gang,

What fish will do the most damage to hair algae? I have some sprouting up on my return nozzles, not so bad on the rocks.

Is there a fish or two that will contend with it? I have not added the new rock yet... I plan on doing that this weekend.

its called the howard fish. don't rely on a fish. :D the only way I was able to tackle it was some elbow grease.

Manual removal and starve it. I have a few crops that I have to pick off once a week and my algae blenny, yellow tang and scopas tang don't touch it. Fortunately I only have a couple small patches that I can pick off when it gets tall enough.

I use my wifes tooth brush to get it off the nozles. JK but I did buy a tooth brush for my tank. brush the nozzles and the teeth on my over flow.

Sounds like a plan.. I am definately not over feeding at this point, but I am a tad worried and as I haven't added the new rock yet, I also don't want the hair algae explosion...

I will use elbow grease... a fish or two later after rock is added and things settle down.

Thanks

I had major hair algae issues when I first started my tank. I got a yellow tang and a lawnmower blennie and the mowed it down. I have never had a problem since.

foxface

When I had my midnight angel it ate ALL my algae, only left purple stuff. What a fatty he was.

I assume you are using good RODI water, good RODI cartridges and that your RODI water tests at "0" TDS???:D

If that is the case, then you can limit feeding, limit bioload, change water and finally, you can outcompete the algae by growing your own in a fuge....dump a decent amount of chaeto in a fuge with a metal halide and it will start growing very rapidly taking up the excess phosphates.

I would set this up before putting your rock in there to get all nasty...or you can go "la natural" and put the rock in there with light and all them nutrients, let it grow like crazy mad dogs and get a bunch of hermits to mow it all down...:D

I would agree with nook and Jx.
I would not depend on any specific fish to take care of the problem as any fish as you know will act different. Identify the problem. Isolate the problem before adding the rock. Even though it's a huge filter. Otherwise, you're just going to have more to worry about.
Possibly skim a bit wetter, make sure you have a fuge, cut down the light cycle a bit if you can.

You have a fuge, right? I can't remember which of them you showed me that I thought you were going to use. Ask around for some Cheato if you don't have any. Don't mistake that for Cheeto. Trust me, it doesn't work the same.

P.S. I think all LFS should be banned from selling hermit crabs. :D

Got the fuge going, not a halide, but a nice pc bulb. Was growing well in the old sump. Phosphates are 0 or as close as I can measure. Might need to harvest some chaeto.

Dave... you hurt me dude.... Of course my cartridges are just about ...BRAND SPANKIN NEW....

I figure it is just a bit of a small cycle from switching everything over. The new rock is cured and will be going in this weekend I hope. I do want to keep the hermits to a minimum in this tank if I can.
