reduce all nutrient levels. test your water. ammonia needs to be zero. nitrates -zero
ntrites -zero
and phos- zero
this can be done by feeding less and improving your filtration. test your water source for phos. this is the ussual source. if you strip your levels clean algea cant grow as it has nothing to eat.
ahh yaeh that would cause a spike in levels. just contiue improving the water so that it is prestine and it should burn out once the left over anemone ( liquid fluids from death , and all desinagrated tissue) is removed .
thereb are lots of options but thats a band aid to an issue verses eliminating it. you can add an algea eater but the algea wont stop just consumed regularly. you want to eliminate it from existing not prune to limit its growth. an algea blenny will eat it if its short some tangs do some angels do too. none are a garentee as some dont touch it some do.
mandarine dont eat algea...if you did research it he only eats pods. and a watchman goby doesnt eat algea either.
honestly sounds like you are going way to fast with no info. to avoid this again do lots of research before adding anything. also consider your tanks size. and by the way OF COURSE you have had bad luck with a tang. no one does when they add one to a new tank. tangs shouldnt be considered until you've establish a stable tank ( at least 8 months into tanks life) and the bioload needs to be very low in coparison to bacteria . every heard of the tang police? you could of been ticketed for adding a tang to your tank that fast. LOL .....now you have to take it for what it is....keep up maintanace and expect to lose some stock....sorry but its gonna happen due to your rushing the stock. hopfully you can keep waterchanges up enough to not threaten too much life but this will delay bacteria cycle time. to cycle fast your let water be. let ammonia spike for days...watch ntirte spike...then ntrates.....then as nitrates increase ammonia drops thus the cycle occured. this proccess will kill your live stock so now you have to do it slow and it will be slowed by water changes cause they reduce the ntrates and dont allow the natural feeding of the ammonia and thus a complete balance. now youll be interupting it with water changes thus it will take longer.
again your looking for a bandaid verses a solution. yes there are meds yes there are natural feeders but it will come back unless you reduce its food............... NUTRIETS!
that helps but if they are not fast weed like growers then they are not keeping up with your nitrate levels. with the levels you have a proper macro growth would be over whelming due to the amount of food for them. thats why your hair algea is growing fast...your other plants are not as efficient and the hair algea will eventually kill of the other algea by not letting it feed. certain macro is more effiecient at comsuming nutrients and thus grow faster.......like hair algea! but you want a macro in your sump that grows fast and will burn out or kill off any and all algea in display. and not migrate to the display. i use grape caluerpa but you need to find an algea that grows fast for your sump. the way to do this is add a variety to your sump and wait a few month to a year. the a;lgea that survives and kills the rest off is what you keep.
no skimmer? a canister filter? canister alone is not good for a saltwater reef tank. in fact canister filters can be nitrate producers esspecially when the stages houde debris and gunck. i would run it bare except maybe carbon. honestly u need a skimmer. let me explain. a canister trapps debri and grows bacteria to feed on it. a skimmer removes debri before it rots. in other words a skimmer remove fish poop from that day...that fast...and due to immediate removal tank doesnt even notice the nutrients that waste ussual creats.
YOU NEED A SKIMMER! IF U WANT A REEF WITH corals for long term survival.
