I am getting hair algae coming in pretty bad, it is a new setup with liverock from lfs from recent takedown,it had a little on it when I bought it but now is getting worse any advise would be appreciated thanks,Lee

it was initially setup w/ tap(I know stupid) but I have been doing water changes w/ distilled bottled water and no I do not have tds

it will take a long time to cycle through all the tap water. hair algae is a constant never ending battle it seems but with the absoult best regiment of matinince you can beat it.

keep the light turned off to help keep the algae down.

Also basicly you have a new tank. Its a part of the maturing process. Follow the thread that Capn showed you and it will help. When I got really bad algae problems he helped me work through them on my tank. Good luck and dont start going crazy yet.

capn, in your thread you said I should get rid of the bioballs what do you think I should replace it with rubble/cheato? thank for the thread very informative.Lee

would it be safe for my corals if I left the lights off for a few days?I have mushrooms, zoos, nepthia, branching hammer

you can leave the lights off for 3 days its not going to kill the softies in your tank they really dont require that much light .and get rid of the bioballs asap, you can use rubble or if u have cheato its even better, also get a RO unit its cheaper in the long run.

withdraw bioballs handful at a time: give your live rock/sand time to adjust population to more food.

Yes, I agree with sk8r. Bioballs are not a good thing. You need an RO/DI system as buying water is going to be expensive by comparison in the long run.
