Hammer Coral Question

Today I was gifted a nice little head from a big mother colony. The small skeleton was very strangely shaped and I wanted to put it in my frag rack so I used bone cutters to trim most of the skeleton away, probably only a half inch left. Immediately after doing this I realized this may have been dumb. Do they need a good chunk of skeleton or will this be okay?

I think as long as you didn't get into the flesh on the skeleton, you will be okay. Breaking the skeleton is the main way these things propagate, after all.

I definitely didn't hit any of the flesh so hopefully it'll be happy. It has opened up a tiny amount so that looks positive.

I accidentally broke one one time and all that was left was a tiny nub under the flesh. It grew to a 30-head monster.

I've even cracked a skeleton one time so it split up through the head of a hammer. I fitted it in a hole in a rock and left it in my frag tank for 8 weeks and it did just fine. You should be OK. Some corals are very resilient!
