hand feeding my green abalone

so i picked up a small green abalone about 5 months ago when i went to Green Marine for a club buy. i picked him up because jim had told me that this species was a voracious pig when it came to eating and i was having a pretty severe problem with this red nuisance algae. i also picked up several "turbo grazer" snails and the combination of the 2 species of mollusks, my problem was solved. after all the algae was gone i noticed that the abalone was moving all over.......i assumed it was a furious search for food so i decided to try hand feeding it some nore and i couldnt believe how fast it devoured a whole strip! i guess he was real hungry! i tried to get a picture but unfortunately, he blends in to the rock work very well.

Jim @ GM used to do this with his Donkey Ear Abalone. It would beg every night at the rim of the tank and Jim would feed it an entire sheet of Nori. It would chomp it down faster then most large fish would :D Gotta love abs, in the tank, in the ocean and in my belly :)

:fun4:i couldnt agree more! it's kinda funny......my girlfriend hates sea food but loves abalone.......kinda weird......but when i brought it home and called her in to see my newest additions, the first words out of her mouth were "so when are you cooking it for dinner?" i couldnt help but roll on the floor laughing! i told her probably 4-6 years:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

i had one but the cow fish kept picking at it so much until he killed it. I'll get another but i remmebr doing the same feeding. It was crazy to watch that guy eat food. Mine was over 3 inch when the cow got him flipped over one night and in the moring it was not a pretty sight....nasarias snails all over him the cow fish belly full and nasty stuff all in the tank. that was one of my worst moments in tank history....the top was when i forgot to turn all heaters and pumps back on over night and woke up to dead fish and coral......it's been a long road....enjoy the abb.
